Dear families
The end of term three has ended with a wonderful day of celebrations. Thank you to our families who were able to join us today for our assembly, class visits, morning tea, information session, disco and sausage sizzle. Your presence was very much valued!
As each term passes, I continue to enjoy the activities and events planned for our students and families. Each event becomes a new highlight, with the most recent being the Cricket Carnival and the Education Support Ball. What I love most about this school is the deep ethos and belief in your children and the very clear vision of what they CAN achieve. We enjoy seeing this every day.
Following a wonderful review, I am very pleased to provide a copy of our Public School Review report. The report describes our areas of great achievement and work that is continuing as part of our continuous self-assessment and improvement agenda. Once again, I express my gratitude to our staff who have demonstrated thier unwavering committment and cohesive approach towards success for every child. Please find a copy of the report below.
Our calendar for term 4 promises to bring even more opportunity for celebration and is now available via our Schoolzine app, on our website and newsletter. Please make sure to check for all events, assemblies and graduations. These may be easier to access through the Schoolzine app which we encourage all families to download to their phones. Our reception team are very happy to assist in subscribing you to the app at any time.
From our Malibu School families to yours, have a wonderful and safe break and we look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday 12th October.
Kind regards
Merrilee Wright, Principal
Pfizer Vaccinations offered at Malibu School
Malibu School is very pleased to host a Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccination clinic for people aged 12 years and over. Vaccination is a safe and effective way to help prevent people from getting seriously ill. The clinics will be held on Tuesday 12, Wednesday 13 and Thursday 14 October 2021 between 8am and 3pm. It is a walk-in clinic for Malibu School staff, students, families and friends and no appointment is necessary.
Consent forms have been sent home today and may be downloaded by clicking on the PDF below, collected at reception or downloaded at Consent form for COVID-19 vaccination | Australian Government Department of Health
A completed consent form is required for each individual seeking the vaccination. It is preferred that a parent/guardian is present with students, however, Malibu staff may support your child if the form is fully completed with the correct guardian consent. Any individual attending must have a fully completed consent form and provide their Medicare details with appropriate ID.
Please note that the clinic can provide Dose 1 or Dose 2 of the vaccine. You will need to provide confirmation of your first vaccination and ensure the required 3 week period has elapsed if seeking the second dose.
If you have any questions or concerns about you or your child getting vaccinated, please discuss with your GP, Specialist or visit the Healthy WA website. Further information can be provided by calling the COVID-19 helpline on 13 268 43.

An incredible evening attended by six of our spectacular senior students who dressed, dined and danced through the night at the Hyatt Ballroom. We were joined by students and staff from other Education Support Schools and had a blast meeting new friends to share this memorable eve with.
Thank you to our families, carers and staff who made such a wonderful evening possible.

The School Board is extremely pleased to present our next award to Lucretia Ramsay for her significant contributions across our Malibu community. In particular, the Board wish to recognise Lucretia's dedication to the Malibu Little Stars Playgroup Plus which has introduced so many of our families to Malibu School. Lucretia’s dedication, enthusiasm, hard work and passion for reaching out to the families in our community and helping them feel at home, is greatly appreciated, as is her leadership of the Malibu Kolbe Glee Club and the numerous events through teh Family and Community Engagement (FACE) Team. Thank you for all that you do Lucretia!!

Meet our team - Sue Mummery
Sue originally joined Malibu School as an Education Assistant before moving into her current role as Admin Support Officer in the Library. Sue is dedicated to the students and her work extends beyond keeping the Library well resourced. She volunteers her personal time to help with the Breakfast Club and is regularly seen supporting other staff with initiatives such as Book Week. Sue is the 'go to' person for any resources and is always happy to help. She welcomes a challenge and always finds a solution and works hard to make sure the Library is a welcoming and fun learning space for all.
TA 1 - Money & Maths
This term we have been learning the importance of money in Mathematics. We have been identifying the Australian coins by ordering, identifying their colours, what images are on the faces and counting to make up amounts different ways.
The students in TA1 are also going to see Ms Jane at Malibu Café on Thursdays. They all have their wallets with their spending money, and they get to choose which goodies they’d like to buy. They are supported by staff to count the correct amounts and they hand over their money to receive their chosen food or drink. The students then sit in the café to enjoy their treats.
When we return to class, all students reflect on what they bought and spent by completing a Malibu Café receipt to send home.
It is a wonderful incentive to see TA1 being so independent in their choice making and understanding the importance of money. Well done TA1, we are very proud of you all 😊
From Mrs Di, Desiree, Grace, Mel and Tylah
TA8 - Discovering the World
This term during Geography , we have been learning about a variety of countries across the world.
We explore the country’s flag, landscape, food, traditions and games/sports. The countries we have learnt about so far are: Australia, Nicaragua, Peru, Nigeria, Indonesia and South Africa. Our amazing Halima is from South Africa so she brought in some special South African treats for us all to try; these were Tennis sweet coconut biscuits, Flings chips and a South African soft drink. The students really enjoyed tasting all the new foods.

TA 10 - Fun & Learning
It has been a jam-packed term in TA10. We’ve been learning about lots of new concepts as well as participating in a number of whole school events such as Book Week and the Faction Carnival. In class we have been learning how to become independent at making a vegemite sandwich, following all the appropriate steps to complete the process. In Maths our focus has been on learning about addition. With the help of the book "One is a Snail, Ten is a Crab" and concrete materials, we have been counting, adding and finding out how many altogether. We have been working hard, learning lots and enjoying ourselves along the way!
Simone, Torri, Jane, Lucarna and Tylah
TA 12 - Developing Work Skills
In TA12, we have been having a fabulous time building our work skills. On Mondays, our students participate in Workplace Learning offsite, or Work Skills in a combined class with TA13. This ensures our day is about the life of ‘work’, rather than our academic school routine. We are learning to become hard workers with a strong skillset, that benefits us in our transition into adulthood. Some of the opportunities we have engaged in are:
- Inspire Radio: takes place at a local radio station. Students have cleaned, reorganised spaces and participated live broadcasts on the radio.
- Good Sammy’s: working as a volunteer at the local op shop to follow instructions and complete tasks with increasing independence.
- Mail deliveries: students push the mail trolley to various classrooms around the school and carry out deliveries.
- Office jobs: students help create resources and operate office equipment such as printers, laminators and computers.
- Bicycle maintenance: includes checking tyre pressure, greasing chains, replacing broken parts and cleaning equipment.
- Gym equipment maintenance: cleaning down surfaces, organising spaces and pumping up balls.
- Paper shredding: shredding documents and scrap paper. We hope to use this shredded paper in a microenterprise down the track.
- Café Program: students work in the Malibu Café to carry out various tasks. Students take orders, prepare food, clean areas and deliver food.

Physical Education: Fun at the Carnival
On Wednesday 8th September, the sun shone brightly and was beckoning a fun filled Faction Carnival. While Malibu has had many Athletics based carnivals over the years, this was the first in which the students and staff were in Factions, and it certainly added to the excitement and friendly rivalry. Students had been practicing events they were going to participate in during the Carnival in the several weeks before in their Physical Education lessons, and WOW, what an incredible job they all did.
The Faction Carnival commenced as each Faction (Orange, Green and Maroon) marched as a team around the bike track while students, staff, parents and carers cheered. Students ran races over short distances, jumped over hurdles, carried an egg on a spoon (albeit with many students finding their own unique way not to drop the ‘egg’), pushed Fit-Balls, jumped in a Sack race and even demonstrated how they could run for a long ‘marathon’ around the entire bike track by going at a slower pace. Most of our students who were in wheelchairs had fun participating in speed up and back, Salome races, bean bag and hoop activities, using pool noodles to knock over a pin and frog relays. Students loved having tug-o-war competitions between the rival Factions, with Green Faction being our strongest team in both Junior and Senior.
I was so impressed by the students enthusiasm, with many so eager to get going, we had more than a few false starts, but even more so, I was impressed by the students resilience and how they ‘did their best’ and found ways to finish even when the event was a little challenging for them. I also was so proud of the students supporting each other by cheering and showing wonderful sportsmanship and for the ongoing encouragement, praise and support demonstrated by staff.
Thank you to the many Malibu staff helpers who all contributed to make this a fun filled, exciting and dare I say, tiring Faction Carnival, including the F.A.C.E group (Family and Community Engagement) and the Specialist Teachers as well as so many others that assisted with cutting up fruits for the students and making decorations and banners and organizing marching music. I’m sure lots of tired students had a good sleep that night.
I wish I could post hundreds of photos of the smiling students having a go at the events, but I’m sure more will be displayed over time. Enjoy a few photos of Malibu’s first Faction Carnival.
Debbie and Simone.

Malibu Nurses Update
Dental Hygiene Tips for your Children
- Encourage children to brush their teeth using a low-fluoride toothpaste morning and night with adult assistance. Spit out, don't rinse after brushing teeth.
- The fluoride in toothpaste may protect against the development of plaque, so not rinsing toothpaste off allows the toothpaste to form a protective barrier on teeth even after brushing.
- Encourage children to choose water as their preferred drink.
- Encourage healthy eating habits in children and young people.
- Reducing intake of sugar- sweetened beverages, juice, sweets and processed foods are all recommended
If your School Health Nurse is concerned, the nurse:
- Will make contact with the parent/carer
- Provide information on nutrition and child feeding practices such as:
- Do not put baby/child to bed with a bottle.
- Only give water or milk in a baby’s bottle. Do not give fruit juice, cordial, soft drinks or flavoured milks.
- If a child is using a dummy, do not dip the dummy in any substance
For children aged under 18 months, when the infant has a few teeth, toothpaste is not required.
For children aged 18 months to 6 years, use a pea sized amount of children’s low fluoride toothpaste.
For children aged over 6 years, use a small amount of adult toothpaste.
Children under 8 years need supervision and help to brush their teeth.
Other key messages:
- Everyone in the family should have their own toothbrush.
- Replace toothbrushes every 3 to 4 months, or earlier if bristles are frayed.
- Everyone should brush their teeth or have their teeth brushed twice a day.
- Make toothbrushing positive by being a role model and having a fun time together.
- Electric toothbrushes are not routinely recommended
- Young children using electric toothbrushes require supervision to ensure correct technique.
- Check for signs of decay every month.
- Recommend a dental review, see referral options
- Do you know that the School Dental service provides FREE dental care to high school students yrs 8-11? Enquire here dental.wa.gov.au
