Malibu School Newsletter - 2024 Term 3 Week 10
Principal's Pen
Dear families
I hope you and your family have enjoyed your holidays. I know our staff have appreciated some time to re-energise and refresh, ready for a great term ahead.
This newsletter celebrates the wonderful achievements during term 3 and includes information about events coming up for our final term of 2024. It is always a busy and exciting term, with graduations, the Market Day @ Malibu, Navy Day and the added mixed feelings of our last term for many of our most senior students.
I advise that we say farewell EA Karen Gallant in J1. Karen commenced at Malibu as a School Nurse before taking up a role as EA and will be greatly missed. We wish her well and hope that we may see her back from time to time as a valued casual at Malibu. We are also very grateful to teacher Nahdene Sealey in J1, who led the team on Wednesdays, now taking up a full-time role in a local Primary School.
I am pleased that we welcome new teachers to Malibu this term - Ladawan Lane will be joining us in M2 as our most recent permanent teacher and we are excited to introduce Frank Jekey-Green to our STEM classes. Both bring wonderful enthusiasm and energy and I'm looking forward to their input and contributions to the team towards great learning journeys for our students. Teacher Kate Dee will be moving to S2 to the end of the year and I know each of these teachers will make great connections with our students and families.
With so much on, I encourage you to keep up to date via our website calendar, which can also be easily accessed on your phone. Downloading the Schoolzine app on your phone is the easiest way to notify us of absences, check important dates, access the newsletter and website. Please let your child's teacher know if you would like any help to download the app.
Ahead of a great term 4, I wish you and your family a wonderful day and look forward to welcoming the students back on Tuesday!
Kind regards
Merrilee Wright
News from the Board
Hi families
I'm happy to advise that we will be welcoming new family representative Rebecca Tabulo to our School Board.
Rebecca has four children and is proud parent of Erik, in J3. Beck has a keen interest in Paediatric Allied Health as an Allied Health Assistant, specialising in Occupational Therapy and Art Therapy. Beck's Husband Matthew is the Senior Weapons Electrical Engineering Officer of Submarine Force at HMAS Stirling and we have been honoured to host Matthew during our previous Remembrance Day services.
We welcome Beck's experience as a valued parent representative for the Malibu School Board.

Middle 2
We have had a busy Term in Middle 2. We have been learning about capacity in Maths, filling up different sized containers with water and blocks to identify which container has the most or least capacity. Students have been learning about money and pretended to buy items using money. We have been learning about where different types of foods are produced in Australia in Geography like rice, grapes, beef and canola.
The class travelled on the school bus with students from the seniors to the career expo in Week 8 at Rockingham TAFE. Students learnt about different jobs, touched the hair at the hairdressing stall and picked up a pretend baby.
Students are excited to create and sell their Enterprise product of glass keychains next Term. The class chose the designs, learnt about how much keychains are sold for, created the logo for the keychains and chose the packaging to use for the keychains.
In Week 8 we celebrated our wonderful Education Assistants Charmayne, Elle, Lucy and Jovannah with songs, gifts and a class party. In Week 6 students had a ball celebrating book week, making potions and dancing at the disco. On Monday Week 9 the class caught the Transperth bus to Wakiki shops and Dome. We had our morning tea, walked around the shops, chose food to buy at Dome and ate our food. The class has some exciting excursions planned for Term 4 learning about jobs and different types of transport in the past. Have a great holiday and see you in Term 4!
Kate, Elle, Charmayne, Jovanna, Lucy
Middle 3
What a marvellous term we have had in M3! We have celebrated many wins and as the Teacher, I continue to be astounded by what our learners achieve each and every day. The students have been making steady progress towards their IEP goals as well as kicking many goals in their social and emotional development.
The biggest achievement for our students this term would have to be commencement of our community access program. Once a fortnight we have joined our friends in M5 for lunch at the Dome café in Waikiki, we have explored a variety of transport options including public transport, the Malibu school bus and even walking. M3 students have done a wonderful job of listening to their adults while travelling, showing their ability to uphold our school value of “keep safe”. Going out into the community and being in unfamiliar environments can be very daunting for most of our students, I am so proud of how they have demonstrated the school value of “be your best” by being brave and trying something new- most now look forward to our outings. In term 4 we will continue our community access program by visiting our local Bunnings to learn about different jobs people do in the community, we are all very much looking forward to it.
We have also been busy making preparations for our market day product as part of our enterprise studies. We are excited to announce that this year we will be selling flowerpot decorating kits. We look forward to giving people the opportunity to decorate their pot in a style that is as unique as they are and then planting and watching seeds bloom into beautiful flowers.
Behind every achievement made by our students is a team of incredible Education Assistants who work tirelessly both with our students and behind the scenes to make sure that everything runs smoothly. Thank you to Monica, Kylie, Audrey, Fleur and Daniella, the work you do is incredible and M3 would not be the same without you. I hope you all enjoyed the heartfelt cards and gifts from our students and their families during EA appreciation week.
Have an awesome holiday everyone, look forward to seeing you in Term 4!
Liam, Fleur, Kylie, Monica, Daniella, Audrey
Science
Students have been learning about Biology (living things) this term in science.
Many of our students had the wonderful experience of handling our baby chicks which hatched last week. They just started to get their feathers and are so cute, especially the little black one, who loves to sit still while being handled.
Students also had a great time visiting Scitech and experiencing all the hands-on learning about space, kinetic energy and forces. The smiles on the staff and students engaging with the different activities were priceless.
Other learning this term has been centred around learning different body parts, animal features, life cycles, and body systems. Students have enjoyed conducting experiments that help them appreciate the way their bodies work. For example, much laughter happened when year 9 students tried to do things without the use of their thumbs, seeing how exercise affects their heart or using their taste buds to see how food tastes spicy, salty, sweet or sour.
Next term we look forward to learning about using different forces in physical science.
