Dear families
Welcome to the start of week 6! The term is flying by and I am pleased to advise that your child's Semester 2 IEP is on the way. Thank you to our families who were able to meet and talk with your child's teacher. This makes all the difference in planning for a successful semester.
This week is Book Week and we look forward to an incredible dress up day tomorrow, with the theme 'magic'. You are welcome to send a book in for the annual 'book swap' and we look forward to our magic potion making incursion on Friday.
EA Union Meeting on Wednesday
As you may have heard, unions are holding an event this Wednesday, 21 August 2024. This will include some of our EAs.
School impact: We expect the impact to be manageable and the school will remain open. Currently, we will not be sending our Senior Students to Workplace Learning activities on that day and there will be a large number of relief EAs working in your child's class.
Student attendance: It is a normal school day and students attend as usual. If your child is likely to experience difficulty working with relief EAs, please let your child's teacher know if you choose to keep your children at home for the day and their absence will be recorded as an exemption.
Please contact the school if you would like to discuss this matter.
Staffing changes
As you know, the last few years have presented schools across Australia with staffing challenges. We have been very grateful to have so many wonderful and caring teachers and EAs come through our Malibu doors, though always keen for more! With much gratitude for their service and collegiality, I advise that we farewell Teachers Amy Bassolo (Woodwork and Digital Technology) and Verity Besseling (The Arts) soon. Amy will be taking up a role in a local Primary School and we wish her well in her new school. I am pleased to advise that Verity will be continuing Mondays with the Seniors.
Upcoming events - we'd love to see you
With so many events, knowing the lives of our families is so very busy, we try to keep our families up to date via our website calendar, through the events page on our newsletter and in Seesaw. Dads and Dudes - we hope to see you in our classes soon and to wander around our P&C Father's Day Stall.
We also have our EA week coming up soon - families are most welcome to send something kind about our fabulous EAs in the week starting September 2nd.
The end of term will be a celebration during our end of term assembly, followed by our whole-school Faction Carnival. We certainly hope to see all families there!
Wishing our Malibu Bucket Drummers and Glee Clubbers the very best performance with much fun for their concert at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre next Wednesday. We're so proud! Have a blast!
Hopefully I'll see you there!
Kind regards
Merrilee Wright
News from the Board
Hi families
The Board met last week and we had the opportunity to meet Heather Stephens, our Middle Years Deputy. On behalf of Merrilee, Heather presented the draft Business Plan 2024 – 2027 and discussed the 3 priority areas, key strategies and targets. Board members asked questions and provided feedback for the next draft.
We viewed posters that are on display around the school with quotes from staff. These quotes were the result of a question posed to them by Merrilee “Why are you on the Malibu bus?” at the recent School Development Day. Reading why staff were on the Malibu bus was heart-warming and reassuring for us as parents and carers. We also really liked the analogy of being on the Malibu bus and we agreed that really, we were also on this bus as parents and Board members.
We would like to thank David Down for his contribution as a Parent Representative on the School Board as he steps down and welcome Kellie Down, who is also our P&C President, and will be taking on the roll as Parent Representative.
We do still have one parent representative position to fill. Please consider if you would like to join our School Board and send your Expression of Interest via this link, by Friday 30th August. There's lots of support, your knowledge as the primary care giver for a child at Malibu School is just what we need.
Click here to nominate to become a Parent Representative on the School Board!
We hope to see you soon.

Some of our members will be attending the WACSSO Conference this month, a chance to network and learn from other P&C groups and listen to a variety of speakers on the impact of P&C Associations in schools. We look forward to sharing what we learn!

Junior 1
Hey everyone, can you believe we are already in Semester 2? The students in Kindy have had a fantastic start to the term! This semester, we are diving into the thrilling theme of Zoo Animals. Get ready for an adventure as we listen to fascinating books about zoo animals, unleash our creativity with animal crafts, and dive into thrilling zoo animal sensory play!
That’s not all - we are also embarking on an alphabet adventure this semester. We are mastering letter names and sounds, discovering alphabet objects in our mystery bag, unleashing our creativity with alphabet process art, and immersing ourselves in alphabet-themed sensory play.
We’ve already kicked off the term by diving into Eric Hill’s lift-the-flap book “Find Spot at the Zoo”. Join us as we tag along with Spot and his family on their zoo exploration and meet new animals. From turning the pages to lifting the flaps, we’ve encountered butterflies, monkeys, penguins, and tigers! After the book, we got hands-on by creating colourful butterflies and fluffy penguins. Plus, we dived into sensory play, helping zoo animals escape from zip-lock bags and enjoying pasta playtime with our zoo friends.
We also ventured into ‘Two at the Zoo’. We embarked on an adventure with a young boy and his grandpa, counting our way through a colourful and unusual zoo and meeting a wide array of friendly animals, including bears, lions, alligators, and even spiders. After the story, we got creative by making a bubbly brown bear and a snippy alligator. We built our own zoo wonderland with zoo animal toys made from shredded paper, artificial grass, and leaves in sensory play.
So far, we’ve been introduced to the letters A, B, and C. We’ve been busy mastering the letter names and sounds, practising how to write the letters, and unleashing our creativity with process art for each letter. We’ve been having a blast with everything from apple painting to balloon art and corn creations. And let’s not forget the alphabet sensory play—from peeling slinky apples to bathing baby dolls and having fun with cornflakes.
We love learning in Kindy and can’t wait to see what book we’ll dive into next, what letters we’ll conquer, and what sensational crafts we’ll create. It will be an incredible adventure, and we’re ready for it!

Junior 5
Junior 5 ended Term 2 on a high note, celebrating NAIDOC Week with a variety of engaging activities. Students had the opportunity to weave totems using hay and thread and participate in a Walkabout featuring six sensory stations, each representing a Noongar season. The week culminated with a special assembly performance by Junior 5 and Junior 6, where students showcased their handmade tapping sticks while performing to the song 'Djapana' by Yothu Yindi.
As Term 3 begins, we've already been busy with fun activities. We kicked off the term with the comfiest day of the year, 'National Pyjama Day,' where students came to school in their pyjamas and slippers to raise awareness and funds for children in foster care.
Additionally, Junior 5 enjoyed a Bushtucker workshop, where we learned about a variety of Australian native plants with edible fruits, nuts, seeds, and leaves. Students had the chance to taste some of the leaves from the plants presented and then planted new plants in the school garden. We are excited to maintain our garden and use the produce in future cooking activities.

Middle 6
Middle 6 have had a great start back into Term 3. We kicked off the first week with IEP meetings with families. A big thank you to the families that attended, this is a crucial time that allows myself and families to collaborate and plan to ensure our students reach their potential and set goals for the second semester. During literacy in our class, the students enjoyed creating their own Crayola name box and their little hen. In Health, Middle 6 have been learning all about personal hygiene. We have been demonstrating how to brush our teeth properly and practicing on the mouth models for 2 minutes to the toothbrush song. In Humanities and Social Sciences, we have been exploring the City of Rockingham by looking at where we live and what Rockingham offers to the people that live and visit there. The students created a collage of images of Rockingham and Perth. Middle 6 have had a fantastic first few weeks and have seamlessly engaged and adapted back into the classroom routines as well as building strong positive relationships with our new staff members: a special welcome to Tara Brown and Xiangyan Shi. Middle 6 are beginning fortnightly travel training this term, which we are all very excited and looking forward to!
It is so wonderful to witness the small wins and triumphs that the students make every day in and outside the classroom. The staff of Middle 6 are an outstanding bunch that work very hard every day to ensure our students thrive in whatever they do, so to them I say a big thank you!
We are very excited heading into Semester 2 with lots of learning, fun and activities planned!

Digital Technology
Junior classes begun the term by listening to a story called ‘How to code a sandcastle’ and then they coded their own sandcastle. They have also been learning about positional and directional language to further develop their coding skills. Students have used the Robot Mouse coding kits to build a maze and are developing the skills to program a robot mouse through their map. The Pre-Primary students have begun to use the Scratch Jnr iPad application and will continue to develop their understanding of the application throughout the term.
Middle classes begun the term by creating dance codes and they even coded a peer or adult to dance their code. They have also been learning about stop motion animation by viewing stop motion videos and using the Stop Motion application on the iPad. Students have created their own stop motion video of a car or our Malibu School bus travelling down a road map. Students have planned their own stop motion videos that we will continue to create throughout the term.
Senior classes have continued to learn about Woodwork during the term. They have been learning about different woodworking personal protective equipment (PPE) and woodworking tools. Students in Senior One, Two and Three have applied their knowledge of woodworking PPE and tools to make their own wooden birdhouse. They have painted and decorated their birdhouses using the aesthetic properties of colour and texture. In the coming weeks we will continue to add decorations to our wooden birdhouses using wood working tools. Students in Senior Three have begun to apply their knowledge of woodworking tools by creating a sanding block and will use their sanding blocks in upcoming weeks to begin their final woodworking project.

Hand, foot and mouth disease
To help our families monitor for any indication of hand foot and mouth disease, we provide the information below.
HFMD is very contagious. It spreads through sneezing, coughing, or touching the fluid inside blisters and the virus is also in the poo of infected children.
HFMD has an incubation period of 3-7 days. HFMD can vary in its appearance depending on how far along the student is in the incubation period.
Hand, foot and mouth disease: children | Raising Children Network
Hand-foot-and-mouth-disease.pdf (health.wa.gov.au)
If a staff member suspects that your child may have HFMD, we will call you and ask that you take them to a doctor for a diagnosis. Children with HFMD can come back to school when all vesicles (spots) have formed crusts that are dry.
As for any virus, careful handwashing is the best way to minimise spread, as well as wiping down change tables after nappy changes.
Thank you for keeping your child at home when unwell and for supporting us to keep a safe school.

Preparing for Pathways to Employment Post School (Online) Tues 20th August
The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) would like to invite students with a disability in Years 9-12, their parents, carers and education professionals, to attend a virtual information session. This is a session for young people supported by the NDIS to learn about the supports available to help them prepare for employment after school. We will discuss a range of NDIS-funded supports and other assistance available to help young people build skills to prepare for their transition from school, and support them in achieving employment and other goals.
This event will take place on Tuesday 20th Aug 2024, 8:00 am - 9:00 am.
Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD)
Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019).
Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:
- year of schooling
- category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional
- level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.
This information assists schools to:
- formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools
- consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools
- develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disability.
The NCCD provides state and federal governments with the information they need to plan more broadly for the support of students with disability.
The NCCD will have no direct impact on your child and your child will not be involved in any testing process. The school will provide data to the Australian Government in such a way that no individual student will be able to be identified – the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured. All information is protected by privacy laws that regulate the collection, storage and disclosure of personal information. To find out more about these matters, please refer to the Australian Government’s Privacy Policy (https://www.education.gov.au/privacy-policy).
Further information about the NCCD can be found on the NCCD Portal (https://www.nccd.edu.au).
If you have any questions about the NCCD, please contact the school.
