Dear families
After a very long dry-spell, welcome to the start of winter! This is traditionally the start of cold and flu season and we are grateful that our students stay home when not well. This is particularly important to look after our more vulnerable students and staff.
Recently, I attended the National Disability and Inclusion conference to keep ahead of national conversations about the recent Disability Royal Commission review. Many of you may know that recommendations included progress towards placement for all students to their local 'mainstream' school. During the conference, there continued the overarching theme about the meaning of 'Inclusion' and whether it meant 'place' or 'provision'. While I assure you that there are no current decisions or plans for Malibu that will impact on our students or families, I do support the notion of informed choice, 'belonging' and equity for all, regardless of the setting or place. As part of this national discussion, it is timely and important to make visible what our staff and school do well, as part of celebrating the achievements of our students.
During our recent whole-staff meeting, our teams worked together to complete an activity with minimal resources. The excercise was a visual demonstration of their strongest attribute - the committment to work together towards a shared goal. At Malibu, our shared goal is the success of our young people and I am proud of the creative, innovative, persistent, driven and compassionate way they prioritise every task for every child, towards our school vision for 'A Future Without Limits'. I acknowledge and thank them for the work they do for your child, every day.
Our connection with families has never been more important. We are currently seeking a Parent Representative for our School Board and I encourage any interested parents / carers to apply. Please see the details from our School Board Chair, Jason Biffin, below. Our P&C continues to grow, led by Kellie Downs. In addition to the new parent and carer P&C Facebook page, the P&C have a brilliant Malibu School cookbook planned and I hope everyone of our families will help make this a magnificent Malibu creation by contributing a recipe or two! Please see the P&C section below for more information.
With three weeks left of term, our teachers have been drafting reports, which will be sent home in the last week. Our last week will be a celebration of NAIDOC. NAIDOC Week is an annual celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia. During the week, we are pleased to be hosting Sharyn Egan, Noongar woman and acclaimed artist. In 2024, Tourism WA Invited Sharon to present a major piece of art in the Cottesloe Sculpture by the Sea. Her work ‘Balga Boola – Bigsmob Balga’ can be seen via this link and she will be making similar totems with our students. We also look forward to welcoming you to our end of term assembly, which will include NAIDOC activities and performances. Weather permitting, this will be held in the new Koort (Noongar word for heart).
Lastly, and with very much sorrow, we sadly farewelled dear Elliot from our Pre-Primary class last week. Elliot joined Malibu School in 2023 and became a cherished member of the Early Childhood teams.
On behalf of our Malibu family, Elliot, we will miss your cheeky smile every day and we celebrate the time spent with you. We send much love to Renee and family and our Malibu hearts are with you during this very sad time.
With kindness and warmth.
Merrilee
News from the Board
Hi families
My name is Jason Biffin and I am proud to be the new School Board Chair, following in the steps of past Parent Rep and Chair, Leanne Stewart. Leanne has led our School Board brilliantly over the last few years and we are pleased she remains on our School Board as a Community Member representative.
I have been a part of the Malibu School family since my son Kayden started in year 7. This will be my seventh year at the school and I hope to share my experiences and journey raising a child with special needs with the Malibu community.
Malibu is an incredible school with incredible staff. The friendly and experienced teachers and EAs make sure to support those who are new to Malibu. The staff work with families from Kindergarten to year 12/13 like a family, raising our children together.
Our School Board is looking for a new parent representative to join the team. We meet twice each term for a maximum of 2 hours. During the meetings, we share information, discuss a range of topics and plan for school improvement. The meeting dates for the remainder of the year are;
Term 3 | Tuesday 6th Aug 9am (Wk 4) | Tuesday 3rd Sep 9am (Wk 8) |
Term 4 | Tuesday 29th Oct 9am (Wk 4) | Tuesday 26th Nov 9am (Wk 8) |
There is one parent representative position vacant for a two-year tenure. Please consider joinging the Board. Should more than one parent complete an EOI, an election process will be initiated to fill the vacancy.
Your expression of interest can be submitted through the link below. We hope to hear from you soon.

Junior 2
This term J2 has continued with the theme of “Under the Sea”. We have been reading lots of stories about Sea Animals and the adventures they go on. We have created lots of bright and colourful artworks and craft activities that have encouraged the students to explore their senses and use their imagination.
The students are now feeling much more familiar with the weekly timetable and are transitioning with more independence around the school. They visit Science, Sport, Art, Digital Technology, Music and the school garden and our super big news….. they are now sitting on chairs most of the time for morning circle!! We were super proud of J2 when they presented their first ever assembly item this term “Baby Shark”. Not only was it their first time in front of an audience, but they also presented it on the new Malibu School Stage.
The students work hard every day on their reading, writing, counting, shapes, communication, therapy and sensory goals and we are so proud of the social connections and the progress they are making each and every day.
We all miss Elliot greatly and send our thoughts and love to Renee.
Shelly, Megan, Jacqui, Feny and Jace
Junior 7
J7 have been working hard on developing their PBS skills of being respectful, safe, and doing their best when at school, earning lots of tokens for their efforts. They have been learning to be respectful, learning that they need to share with their peers and take turns. To be safe they have learned that they need to be aware of their friends and give them space when playing together out in the playground. J7 students are always trying to be their best and have each been a class winner with their hard work.
J7 also welcomed new student Hunter this term and he has been learning how to show respect, be safe and do his best when at school.
Suzie, Jess, Lisa, Maddi, Daniella
Middle 1
M1 has been making the most of the sunshine and getting out into the garden to help tidy up and try our home grown produce. We enjoy the sensory aspect of touching the leaves, smelling the fruits, and tasting different foods.
We are practising safe and unsafe choices and being safe, respectful, and our best, both in the classroom and in the playground.
Auslan is a highlight with everyone enjoying our learning songs, and mastering the alphabet, key words, and overall Auslan literacy.
We talk about our feelings and how our bodies look and feel when we are happy, angry, sad or scared. This is to help us recognise and label our own feelings and also help our friends when they have big feelings. Every day we check in with our friends and ask them how they feel, so we can help them find the right tools to make a safe ‘green’ choice. We are practicing taking turns, and being a good sport, because ‘you win some, you lose some’.
Trish, Andrea, Jhoanna, Sharon
Middle 2
M2 have been learning about jobs at the school and in the community in Enterprise. Students selected the type of sustainable keychain they would like to make. We walked around the school and talked to different people who work at the school including the School Officers, Daniel the IT Technician and Trish in Student Services. On Mondays we have been going on Community Access Excursions to the Octopus Park in Secret Harbour, Pirate Cove in Golden Bay, Rockingham Shopping Centre where we caught public transport, learnt about healthy and unhealthy foods and how to be safe in the community. We travelled on the school bus to Mandurah to see one of the Giants in Halls Head. We went on the school bus to Baldivis Children's Forest where we went for a walk, saw some kangaroos and listened to the birds. Once we come back from the excursions we look at photos from the excursion and write about or type on a computer and use the PODD book or device to explain what we did on the excursion and how we felt.
We created some tissue paper flowers for Mother's Day, made and put a plant in a pot we decorated, decorated an arrowroot biscuit using icing and lollies and decorated a crown for Mum or a carer. M2 have been making some tasty treats in cooking like chocolate crack and choc chip biscuits. In Maths we have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes.
Students from M2 went to Warnbro High a few weeks ago to attend a try a sport event where they had a go playing soccer organised and run by blind people where students had to wear blind folds, basketball and volleyball.

Senior 2
The students in Senior Two have shown tremendous leadership on their journey through Year 12 as they prepare for transition from secondary schooling into the community and/or work force.
Most of our classroom-based learning has focused on work related tasks including using interpersonal skills, learning about skill sets for different workplaces and applying math knowledge to real life contexts. Of course, we’ve also had time for cooking, developing our entrepreneurial talents, fostering friendships and just enjoying each other’s company!
At school, our S2 Senior leaders have proudly led whole school assemblies and the ANZAC Day Service. Mondays are dedicated to specialist classes including sport, digital technology, Visual Arts and Science. And this term some of the class rejoiced at the return of Glee Club!
The class have also been busy attending work placements which has given each student the opportunity to meet and learn how to work with new people, develop their work skills and independence and find jobs that may be a good fit when school is finished.
On most Fridays, the class use public transport to access different areas within the community including visiting and lunching at Rockingham City Shopping Centre, Zone Bowling, the Mandurah and Rockingham foreshores and the cinemas – just to name a few!
Miss Deb, Angela, Mary and Patricia
Senior 3
We've had a busy term working in the classroom and the community and participating in numerous events. Senior 3 students took part in community activities such as Clean Up Australia Day. They visited Fantasy Park in Rockingham and working in pairs with staff, helped collect rubbish to contribute to keeping Australia clean. Another exciting event we attended was a sports day at Warnbro High School, where we interacted with several schools in the Rockingham area, including both primary and secondary schools.
We are currently implementing the ASDAN curriculum. The "Using Leisure Time" module is being well-received. It allows students to prepare for outings, visit museums, use different modes of transport, and have an enjoyable experience wherever they go. In the classroom, we are focusing on subjects that include identifying community signs and their importance in keeping us safe, as well as social competencies. In math, students are working on money skills, calendars and time, and measurement to assist with event planning.
Robyn, Sam, Adam & Nikayla
Music
The Music room has been buzzing with the sounds of new instruments this term as students explore everything from the large gathering drums to ukuleles. Middle students are enjoying learning to play one of three instruments: piano keyboards, ukuleles or xylophones. With regular, hands-on practice opportunities, they are following a combination of colour schemes and notation to strum, play and develop their proficiencies in their chosen instrument. We are also listening to and providing opinions on a range of legendary Australian music artists.
Primary students are becoming familiar with the use hand-held percussion instruments to make different sounds and maintain a steady beat. We also have a lot of fun improvising our own rhythms!
Our Early Childhood students are using gathering drums to make music together. We are using ribbons and parachutes to encourage lots of movement while we learn the fundamentals of music making.
Earlier this week, we were excited to host the incredible brass band, ‘Junkadelic’ for an incursion at our school. They brought along awesome instruments such as saxophones, a trumpet, sousaphone and bucket drums. Junior students were treated to an instrument making session, followed by a high energy, interactive funkadelic performance from the Junkadelic musicians. Middle students also watched an afternoon performance and joined in using some pre-made instruments, all made from recycled materials. The shows were amazing and we all thoroughly enjoyed the day!

Physical Education
Physical Education lessons are always full of energy, activity and enthusiasm.
The beautiful weather has allowed students to get out on the school bike track and outdoor playground. I am always so impressed with their enjoyment of the sun and natural surroundings.
In the Junior area, we have been focussing on safely transitioning to the PE hall and following instructions to move our bodies in different ways.
We played a variety of games focussing on learning the to follow the rules of the PE Hall, and safely using the equipment. We have been experiencing obstacle courses and skills development activities focussing on the development of our locomotor Fundamental Movement Skills which include - walking, jumping, crawling and climbing.
Students in Middle and Senior have been practicing using a variety of different sporting equipment. They have been learning new skills on how to participate with their peers especially when using the equipment for each game. They have enjoyed trying tennis, basketball, croquet, soccer and darts. Exploring a variety of games to peak interest and develop skills. Students have also been enjoying learning and playing Cricket. We will be looking at developing our ‘game play’ further next semester.
Some senior classes are loving their dance warm ups and practising safe use of sporting equipment whilst how to share and take turns when it’s required to do so. During our Yogacise sessions S2 are becoming proficient at using their breathing techniques and practising stretching exercises.
