Keys Term 2 Parent Workshop
Principal's Pen
Dear families
We had a few events to end a wonderful week 7. Thank you to those families who were able to attend the Variety WA Creative Car Cruise and our Multicultural Day @ Malibu. The students were the centre of both of these events and I thank the staff for their guidance in making sure they got the most out of these experiences. The pictures on Facebook certainly show how much fun everyone had!
I am deeply grateful for the support from Variety WA who have provided a grant for $20,000. This will go towards the purchase of a second bus (coaster) which will accommodate for our growing population and increase in community and workplace learning outings. We look forward to bringing you more news this year.
Those who attended the school recently will have noticed our new Koort (heart) area, close to completion. We are excited to advise that our first whole-school event in the Koort will be our end of term assembly. Sadly I will be on Long Service Leave, though I am very excited about the new space, which will offer more seating for students and families and a stage area that honours the focus on our students. I expect there may be a few pauses in the proceedings as we learn how to use the new space, though am sure it will be a very exciting morning and hope all of our families will be able to make it!
Literacy blocks in Junior and Middle have been going for a few weeks now, with your child placed in small groups based on their current literacy and communication ability. The literacy program is founded on the evidence-based MultiLit series of explicit language and literacy teaching which is followed by activities to support practice and generalise learning. It's been really pleasing to hear feedback from families regarding the progress of their child.
Our Annual School Board open General Meeting will be held this Tuesday at 9am. Please let us know if you will be attending and if you have any item for the agenda. This meeting will focus on a review of 2023 achievements and plans for this year. Please register your attendance here:
With very much sadness, I advise our Malibu family that dear Rory in M3 passed away recently. Our hearts and thoughts go out to those who loved and cared for Rory. Rory has been at Malibu for the last few years and was a constant source of inspiration and delight. His smart wit and cheeky sense of humour often had staff in fits of laughter, and he is so dearly missed. We know that some of our students were close to Rory, particularly the students in M3, those who lived with him and some students across Middle Block. We also know that parents and carers are the best people to talk about the very sad news of the passing of loved ones and friends with their child.
To help our families guide thier child through this sad news, we have created a Social Story called Our Friend Rory. We encourage you to have a conversation with your child, if you feel this is appropriate, and to reach out to your child's teacher if you have concerns that they may be struggling with this news. Additional resources and supports are available to anyone who is experiencing grief and loss thorugh;
Griefline 8am to 8pm 7 days a week
Beyond Blue 24 hours / 7 days a week
Lifeline 24 hours / 7 days a week
The Grief Centre of WA Counselling, workshops, support
Wishing you and your families well for the week ahead.
Kind regards
Merrilee Wright
Thank you for the sunshine you brought to our lives, Rory.
We learned from you, celebrate you and hope we brought you joy, too.
You are missed and forever in our hearts.
With much love, your Malibu family.

What an amazing start to 2024 in J4!
This year we have welcomed two new students into our classroom – Akeem and Dominic who have settled into the school and class environments amazingly! They have brought so much energy into our class 😊
This term has been a busy one, with Interm swimming in weeks 3 & 4. Everyone who attended swimming lessons did amazing and developed their community access skills by learning to sit on a bus, listen to instructions in a variety of contexts, and participate in swimming lessons with unfamiliar teachers. We are beyond proud of all our students who attended swimming. For the group of students from our class that did not attend swimming, they showed amazing perseverance in dealing with changes in their routines and explored alternative skills such as transitioning to different class environments and engaging with other students in junior block. A huge win for us as a team was all students wearing their shoes to and from Aqua Jetty in the hot sun!
We have had an amazing start to our structured literacy block, where all students transition to alternative classrooms to participate in a variety of literacy learning skills. This term we have also been reading the story Wombat Stew and participating in sensory story telling which everyone has been enjoying, taking advantage of the warm weather out in the garden, and enjoying some messy play activities like jelly!
We are all looking forward to participating in our Multicultural Day celebrations in week 7 and are already hard at work preparing to celebrate Traditional Australian culture! We hope to see you all there.

Junior 6
Welcome back to a new year in J6 and welcome to our new student, Isla and her family. I’m so happy to be at Malibu and working with you and your children. This term has been a busy one for J6. We’ve had swimming lessons during weeks three and four, which our students loved. It was wonderful to see them so happy in the water.
We have begun our transitions to our specialist classes, and have been walking over to Science and Sport, and will be transitioning to Digital Technologies with Amy and to Music with Debbie. Our literacy blocks have also started, and we are transitioning to those classes as well.
Looking forward to doing some Easter activities over the last weeks of term.

Middle 6
Middle 6 have had an awesome start to the year coming into Year 7 and the middle block. We have spent time as a class getting familiar with our new classroom space, new students, new staff and different schedules.
The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden programme has given the students to opportunity to get their hands dirty in the garden, as well as cooking some delicious dishes in the kitchen. Our students have been learning about safety in the kitchen and cleaning up after themselves once the meal is made.
In Math, we have been working diligently on our addition and subtraction skills. We have been using unifix cubes to add and build towers. Taking inspiration from one of our favourite Boardmaker activities, Middle 6 decided to create our own Ladybug Addition artwork. Once given a number, they had to count the number of dots that are on the ladybug and make sure both wings add to the correct number. Check out our amazing Ladybug wall!
During our Enterprise studies, we have been learning the importance of money. We have been playing games to recognise the value of notes and coins, so we can put our skills to use when we sell our product in the Malibu Market!
So far, it has been a blast in Middle 6! Our wonderful staff and students have created a safe, calm and happy environment where we can dance, laugh, learn and thrive. I would like to personally thank our fantastic staff who have worked super hard to allow the students to flourish in our space.
We are looking forward to the rest of the year with plenty of fun, adventure and learning to experience!

Science
This term our students have been learning about Earth and Space.
Our junior students have discovered that there are many things in the sky during the day and night. They are learning that we dress differently when it is cold or hot or if it is raining, sunny or windy. Some students have been exploring with different sand types and and water sources.
Our middle students have been making different crafts connected to the sun and moon. They are developing their understanding of what changes the sun makes by making sun prints and experiments where things have melted. They have seen how sunlight is reflected in the bubbles of tonic water. Some students have made the different parts of earth (core, mantle and crust) using salt dough. Others are creating the different spheres of the earth (air, water, land and living things) with recycled materials.
Some of our senior students have been exploring with different cooking ingredients with their senses. They are learning to be ready for cooking by washing their hands and putting on their hat and apron. They look smashing. Some students have been learning about recycling and are looking forward to going to the recycling plant in Canning Vale next week. Can’t wait!

All Abilities Soccer Team - Baldivis Districts Football Club
The new 'All Abilities - iLeague Team' is for boys and girls, ages 7 - 13 (turning this year) of all abilities.
We are one of three clubs in the state that have an inclusive soccer team and the only one south of the river. We have 6 players already and are looking for kids with different abilities, wanting to play soccer, to be a part of a team or even just have a run around and giggle!
The aim of this team is to have fun, get some exercise in and create a community. We welcome any and all abilities and will cater to anyone's individualised needs. We encourage parents/carers to participate and support their kids during both training and games with the goal of creating confidence for them to go out on their own.
If your child is outside of this age bracket, we would still love for them to come down and participate. If there is enough interest we will create an additional team to accommodate the ages as we want EVERY kid to have the same opportunities as everyone else.
Training is on Wednesdays, normally from 4:30pm - 5pm (to be confirmed), with games on Sundays normally at 10am.
