Dear families
As you read, we are busily preparing for our Graduation and Leaver's ceremony this evening. This will celebrate the end of schooling for some of our students and an occasion marked with much emotion. Our staff are proud and grateful to have shared the lives of our students and families and we prepare to farewell our year 12s and 13s tomorrow for their last school day of 2023.
Tomorrow is our Annual Navy Day, starting with our fabulous Colour Explosion Fun raiser! This is a not-to-be missed event which will be remembered for years! The colour, games, food, fun and friends is so unique and we are honoured to be supported by our local Navy personel from HMAS Stirling. Please come along if you can!
Monday is the big announcement for the WA Education Award. This is the first year for the Excellence in Disability and Inclusion category and we are very proud to be recognised as finalists. The Award event starts at 7am and finishes at 9am. Our category should be called by 8.45am. If you are up and have some time, grab a cuppa and enjoy watching the award announcement online at Department of Education WA - YouTube
So much to celebrate over the next few days. We're glad to share it with you.
Kind regards
Merrilee Wright

P&C
Hello Malibu Family,
What a year we’ve had together. As a new mum to the school this year it’s been a real joy to be involved and get to know some of the staff and families. As this year comes to a close I’m left reflecting on all that we’ve done and achieved. I’m so proud and thankful to all our parents that have come together in our P&C with all their time, efforts and talents. Together we’ve been able to do so much.
Next year our first meeting is booked for Wednesday 14th February 2024 and we would love more families to get involved, even if it’s just a little. It cost as little as $1 to be a financial member which allows you to be voice in our meetings. Look forward to seeing you there.
Tomorrow we draw our Christmas raffle on Navy Day and I can tell you personally that a lot of time has gone into getting great prizes for this one as we want to make it our biggest raffle of the year to Bless everyone in this Christmas season. I can’t wait to give out all the prizes to our lucky winners. There is still plenty of opportunity to buy more tickets and even sell to your loved ones. This is not a raffle to miss! :) Please contact the office for more tickets.
You may not be aware but we have our very own uniform shop at our school to give families an option to buy second hand. The lovely Kelly Smith has been running this all year by herself on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, from 8:45-9:45am. Kelly washes everything and even does a special wash on hats before they go out for sale. She is going on leave for a couple of weeks now for a well deserved break. So you will get to see some other lovely faces from our P&C. Thank you Kelly for everything you’ve done. You are a champion. Going over and above for our Malibu family. For as little as $3 you can purchase school uniform items with logos on them and $2 for non logo items. If you have any secondhand uniforms (including non logo items) that your kids have out grown please bring them in and donate them to our uniform shop. No matter the condition as you be surprised how Kelly has worked some magic on them. This really helps our families that can’t buy all new uniforms. I myself have taken the opportunity to have extra shirts ect for my boy as I couldn’t justify buying several new shirts.
Our P&C is on the look out for an accountant and wondered if there was an accountant within our Malibu Family who wouldn’t mind donating their services.
I want to express my warmest thanks to everyone that has helped to grow our P&C. Your contributions has been invaluable over the past year.
Much Love and Blessings to all our Malibu Families in this Christmas season. We look forward to see you all next year.
Yours Sincerely
Sarah Phillips
P&C President
2024 Therapy Requests at Malibu School
We seek your assistance in your Therapy planning for 2024 at Malibu School.
Therapists (in partnership with parents and carers) are required to complete a Request for Therapy form to return to the school for consideration. In addition, the request will need to include the following;
- Copy of current Working With Children check
- Current Criminal History Check or a NDIS screening letter displaying NDIS number (full letter must be received, NDIS number alone is not sufficient)
- Current Public Insurance documentation
- Full details of the intended therapy, goals and attached plans, as appropriate
- Signed parent / carer consent
Plans must have a date of review, which will indicate when the current therapy ceases or that a new plan will be required. Many existing plans expire at the end of the school year and the school will not host therapies if a plan is no longer current.
We encourage new Requests for Therapy to be submitted at your earliest convenience for 2024. Should the Request be approved, you will be notified and therapy may commence for Kindy-Year 6 Term 1, Week 5 and Year 7-12 from Term 1, Week 3. Early requests will ensure a quicker school access to therapy!
Information about Requests for Therapy and to access the online forms can be found at https://www.malibuschool.wa.edu.au/therapists
Please complete the Request for Therapy form along with the above documents and email the documents to malibu@education.wa.edu.au.
On behalf of our teachers, we appreciate your early consideration for therapy requests to maximise a timely therapy support start for our students next year.
Medication for Students end of year
Please be advised that medication will be returned to parents over the School Holidays and will need to be returned at the start of Term 1 2024. See letter below for more details.
Malibu School Booklist for 2024
Junior 2
This term students in Pre-Primary have been super busy finishing their classroom theme of “Farm Animals”. We have now moved on to the very exciting theme of “Christmas” and are busy reading stories, making crafts and singing songs all about Santa, Rudolph and much more. Our morning Literacy Blocks are successfully running, and students are participating in a variety of activities depending on which Literacy group they attend. A big part of the Literacy Block has been in teaching the students to transition to other classrooms and this is now happening smoothly with the support of visual schedules. Students have been exploring how many syllables are in their name, letter – sounds and how to participate in Shared Reading experiences.
Our Enterprise program concluded this term with the Malibu Market Day and the Pre-Primary students proudly sold their drink coasters and terracotta pots. We were so impressed with the effort that was put into creating some beautiful pieces of work and we received so many compliments on the day.
Swimming and Hydrotherapy has been a very popular part of our weekly program this term and all the students that attend have significantly increased in confidence both in the water and in transitioning into and out of the pool. Therapy programs are a big part of Pre-Primary with many of the students enjoying time in their walkers or standing frames. We often refer to it being like “bumper cars” on the concrete as they all zoom around racing each other. The strength, stamina and determination of Mahira, Tristan, Hunter and Kohen has impressed all of the teaching team in J2.
An important part of commencing full time school is developing the independence of each student. As the school year ends, we are so incredibly proud of how each student is transitioning into school in the mornings, separating happily from both parents and caregivers. Specialist programs have encouraged students to explore beyond their classroom and with the new playground routines of Pre-Primary playing with all Primary students at recess and lunch, some fantastic interactions are taking place amongst peers.

Junior 7
This term we have been working on our financial skills in preparation for running our Market Day stall and our trips to the Malibu Café.
Our focus has been learning about $2 and $1 coins, identifying these coins and adding them up. We searched for them in a treasure chest and then we played ‘musical coins’ to practice our ability to identify the coins quickly.
We were glad we had plenty of practice as we had lots flowing through our hands on Market Day.
Most recently we have had a trip to Malibu Café, where we used our money skills to make some yummy purchases from the lovely Jane.
We have been very busy!

Middle 6
Students in Middle 6 made a great start to Term 4 and quickly adjusted to some big changes, new teacher, new routines and expectations.
Malibu Market Day was a culmination of a lot of hard work, planning, designing and creating their enterprise product ‘Frogs in a Pond’, jelly cups. Students manned the stall, displaying excellent customer service skills while developing their mathematical skills through practical experience with money handling. Middle 6 are proud to say they made a profit of $97.00, an amazing total considering each jelly cup sold for $2.50.
We have had many outings and adventures this term including the Middle Cluster Perth Zoo excursion. Isiah was particularly interested in the Rhinoceros and spent a lot of time watching their behaviour. Aliya and her classmates went to the ESSN Cricket Carnival, joining other Special Needs schools in a busy, fun day with Aliya excelling at bowling and batting to her friends. Jayden R and Declan had a great day too, batting sixes and meeting new friends. More sports with the ESSN Sports Carnival another excellent day with Kimberley and Jamaica experiencing specially designed equipment that made sporting access really fun and easy. Jayden N, Jayden R and Declan played flag rugby and netball and experienced high jump.
Our Year 9 students were invited to explore their future work options at a South Metropolitan Tafe Career Taster event. Declan and Jayden R had a very informative time learning about careers in carpentry, bricklaying, tiling and plastering. Both boys got their hands dirty and had a go at plastering a hole in a wall and laying bricks.
It will be a busy end of year with Navy Day, the Colour Run and the Middle Cluster excursion to Ace Cinemas to see the Trolls Movie in week 9. Middle 6 students are excited about the Christmas break and have started making decorations to take home and keep forever. Merry Christmas from all the students and staff in Middle 6.

Music
Music lessons for Middle Cluster students have taken on a worldwide influence this semester with students working on tribal drumming rhythms on the African djembe drums. Students have learnt about the history and features of the drums, viewed cultural performances and learnt to play bass and open tones to create varied and interesting rhythms in small groups.
Primary students have performed actions to songs with the rhythm sticks and enjoyed Prokofiev’s symphonic story of ‘Peter and The Wolf’, which has seen them identify instruments that represent characters from the story. A Halloween feature with the tuned bells gave everyone the opportunity to engage with pitched instruments and follow melodic sequences.
Early Childhood students met a new puppet called ‘Fuzzy the Clown’, who brought fun and storytelling to life through songs. Other characters to visit class recently are bears, monsters and sea animals. Everyone has enjoyed grooving along to new songs, as well as learning about the extensive range of handheld percussion instruments available from the choice board, ready for moving into the Primary curriculum next year.
Our Malibu Drumming Group performed two songs at the Malibu Market Day on Friday 27th October, attended by numerous education support network schools and their staff, parents and carers. Students rocked out to the beats of Queen’s ‘We Will Rock You’, followed by ABBA’s ‘Dancing Queen’. Everyone did a fantastic job learning the rhythms and actions for these songs and performed with energy and enthusiasm on the day!
