Principal's Pen
Dear families
I would like to share how proud I am of the incredible recognition for the hard work into progressing positive pathways for our students with the Minister's recent announcement that Malibu is a Finalist in this year's WA Education Awards for Excellence in Disability and Inclusion. I have invited a few of our staff to join our School Board Chair Leanne Stewart and I for the announcement breakfast on Monday 4th December. The awards are live streamed so I hope to have a link to send to families soon. In a time when there is so much discussion about inclusion and segregation in schools, please take any opportunity to celebrate what you love about our school. Please comment on the socials, share the posts and ask your families to do the same. Our students deserve a loud voice and I encourage you to shout about our school achievements when you can!
Thank you for an incredible Market Day and for such a great turnout! The best yet. This was such a strong visual for the outside world to see the quality of our Employability Education program learning for life, a key focus in our WA Ed Award nomination. Congratulations to you all. We have also celebrated a fantastic Primary Swimming carnival with our partner schools with great particpation and energy from all attending and I congratulate our staff who supported an incredible Senior School camp in Hillarys. These opportunites give so much to our students and we are proud to share these experiences with them.
The Voice and the impact - A few weeks ago, we were asked to vote in the Voice referendum. While respecting the views of all, I do acknowledge the hurt felt by many of our First Nation people across the country. At Malibu, like all schools across our nation, we are committed to working together to build stronger relationships and culturally responsive practices that improve outcomes for Aboriginal students, that are inclusive of all people. This requires that we are open to hearing about, and better understanding, the lived-experiences and history of those around us. As the leader of our school, a place where we strive every day to ensure our students are seen, heard, included and valued, this ethos extends to all members of our school community as we share the role in ensuring that Malibu is a place of safety and inclusion for all.
The ongoing teacher shortage continues to challenge our Middle Cluster and planning for next year. We welcome back Tiffany Brunswick who has stepped into M6, well-supported by teacher Patricia Khoo until Tiffany is back full-time. We know our families appreciate that teacher illness can occur and we will endeavour to keep you connected if there is an extended period of leave. We prioritise consistency in our classrooms and often the same relief teachers are not avaialble. Fortunately, our EAs are brilliant, providing great stability across classes. Please do reach out to your child's teacher or Deputy in the first instance if you have any concerns.
I am delighted to let you know that next year we welcome the return of our newest permanent teachers Verity Besseling in to Art and return of Liam Martin and Suzie Robertson! We also welcome back Mary Shanahan who will be completing her final prac early next year. Congratulations to Clare Bradshaw who is now a permanent Deputy for Malibu! Although we will miss her, I'm delighted to announce that Deputy Sofie Williams has won a permanent Deputy position at Kalamunda PS ESC as of next year. Sofie will also be stepping into a Deputy role at Warnbro CHS ESC from week 8 this term to the end of the year. This week we celebrated Sandy Hudson and her incredible 19 years of service at Malibu School. Over this time, Sandy had a strong connection with many of the families of Malibu too, providing support out of hours and has seen many students grow up and succeed beyond Malibu. We will miss Sandy and wish her the very best for her adventurous adventures ahead.
My sincere appreciation to parents Jennifer Baggaley, Matt Griffin, teachers Tiffany Brunswick and Shelly Whittall and EA Jane Mills for their incredible service on the School Board. They have led strong discussion about the progress of our school and have participated in conversations around 'what is working well' and 'even better if' in collaboration with families and community members. As the tenure on the Board is for 2 years, these positions are required to be advertised, open to all commencing Feb 2024 – Dec 2025. I encourage our parents who are interested in participating in school discussions and decisions to please put forward a nomination either online via the link below or by requesting a hard copy from the front office.
Have a brilliant week and I hope to see you at our Junior and Middle assembly at 9am and/or our Remeberance Service at 9.45am on Friday. Morning tea will be held in the staffroom for families who will be staying for the service.
Kind regards
Merrilee Wright

We are grateful for the ongoing support of our families and encourage you to consider this unique opportunity to become a Malibu School Board Parent Representative. Your skills and expertise are most needed and welcomed as we work toward ‘A Future Without Limits’ for all students at Malibu School.

2024 School Development Days and Term Dates
Junior 3
We had a fantastic term 3 with many exciting events the students enjoyed participating in.
There was an amazing SciTech incursion that our students thoroughly enjoyed, where they got to experience how all the different colours are combined to make other colours. We also had a great day at the cricket carnival where the skies were rain-free. J3 particularly enjoyed getting out and about at this event and practicing hitting the cricket ball with the bat.
Another exciting event was our school assembly piece. We all enjoyed preparing for this, completing our ocean-themed artwork, and practicing our “Party on the ocean floor” song!
Term 4 is already well underway with our students extremely busy in the classroom conducting product surveys, making our scented bath salts and designing our labels ready for Market Day. Afterwards, we have a fun-packed term where we will all be involved with the inter-school swimming carnival, keeping up with our learning and then getting ready for Christmas and the summer school holiday break.
The students have diligently checked their schedules this term and kept us all on track with what we are supposed to be doing. This has been a work in progress throughout the year, and they should all be very proud of their progress across all subjects.

Junior 5
J5 have hit the ground running with Enterprise this term, and we’re loving it! We are making soaps, soap dishes, chocolates, bath bombs and bath salts. All of our products are made by our students, and they’ve put in so much work to make them as great as they are. Each student will have a chance at manning the table on the day, practising having a shift and taking money from customers. All of our J5 students voted to decide on the products prices, and we can’t wait for you to see us on Market Day on October 27th!
Fast forward to November 2nd as I write this message. Market Day was a huge success for J5 and we made $117 in total. Thank you so much to all the families that came down to support our business venture, we had lots of fun and lots of practice. Next week, we’re taking our experience to Malibu Fresh across the road to begin weekly community access. Thank you and congratulations to all of our students, so proud of how the day went.

Junior 6
Over the year, J6 have been extremely busy and productive. Our biggest highlight has been practicing our travel training and visiting various locations around Perth each Tuesday. They have been using public transport such as the bus and train, and even used the school transport bus to transition to further locations with support from Mrs Bettina. The students have mastered using their smart riders to tag on and off transport, and it has been such a joy to watch their independence grow.
Students have been showing self-sufficiency by holding onto their wallets and purses and making informed decisions about what they want for lunch. They have shown amazing communication skills to articulate or demonstrate using their communication devices to shopkeepers and of course using their exceptional manners as always.
Some of our favourite venues this year have been; Ranger Redz Zoo in Pinjarra, Perth Museum then McDonalds afterwards, catching the train to Mandurah Forum, Containers for Change, Dome, Octopus Park and the movies to see Elemental.
We have welcomed a new student into J6 as well. Rodelle has come in with a big bright smile and a cheeky attitude we are enjoying having her part of her class.
We look forward to a very busy Term 4. We are busy organising Year 6 graduation, Day Camp and our overnight camp coming up which we are all very excited about!
Mrs Di, Mrs Kathlaine, Miss Grace, Ms Andrea, and Miss Daniella.
Sport
The students had a busy and eventful Term Three, with two sports carnivals taking place in September.
On 29th September, our Junior and Middle school students attended the interschool PESA cricket carnival at the Lark Hill Sporting Complex, Port Kennedy. They had a great time and participated in a variety of cricket-based skills and some fun games, including cricket ball throwing, bean bag throwing, hurdles and a miniature cricket match. The students were enthusiastic, and they joined in many events. At the end of the carnival, they returned to school a little tired, but very happy.
On the last day of Term Three, all students attended the school Faction Carnival. Many parents, relatives and carers also came along. It was great to see our students, staff and families wearing the faction colours of orange, maroon or green and to hear the students being cheered on by the spectators. The events included modified races on the basketball court as well as running races, hurdles races and bean bag throwing, as well as old favourites like the egg and spoon race. Every student who participated received a ribbon and many students proudly went home with a collection of five or six. A big thank you to all the staff who helped to organise, set up equipment, run the events and clear up afterwards.
The PESA Swimming Carnival took place on 3rd November at the Aqua Jetty Aquatic Centre in Warnbro for our Junior students. What a great day.
In Term Four, the focus in Phys Ed is on developing and improving fundamental movement skills, such as kicking, throwing, catching and ball control. In addition, student engagement and participation are encouraged by introducing a variety of fun games and activities that everyone can achieve success.
