Dear families
I hope the school holidays have been rewarding for you and your family!
Term 3 has seen a wonderful increase in activity, with numerous community events and carnivals starting and continuing into an exciting term 4. We have many staff working on Enterprise Education learning, leading up to our Annual Market Day and planning is going ahead for our Navy Day later in the term.
I am very pleased to advise that our whole-school approach to Literacy has now progressed from Junior to our Middle Cluster. Classes last for an hour, four times each week, and include a blend of explicit instruction, shared reading and literacy focus activities. Our teachers and EAs have really excelled in delivering this program and our students are highly engaged and making notible gains. Malibu is the first Ed Support in WA to undertake this program incorporating the communication resources and adjustments to support access for our students. This is indeed something to celebrate!
This coming term will be our last for our many of our year 12s and 13s. Our focus is on working with families and service providers to ensure a good transition to the community, well supported by strong connections with NDIS providers. We know Malibu School has been a significant part of our family's lives and look forward to working alongside our families during this time.
You may have read or seen articles in the news about teacher shortages across the country. At the time of this newsletter, we are still seeking one more classroom teacher to start in term 4. No classes will be disrupted and families of any classes that are impacted will be notified later this week. As always, I thank you for your patience and understanding as we work towards consistent stablility in our classrooms.
With this said, I would like to acknowledge and wish the very best to teacher Bev Haji and Lucretia Ramsay. Bev joined us in 2021 for a few months and couldn't leave her class! Bev is pictured below (right) with EA Blair who is heading off to another school next term and we wish them both well for their adventures ahead!
Lucretia commenced at Malibu 17 years ago as an EA. Before too long, she had embedded herself at Malibu and has led many initiatives that have made long-lasting impacts. One of these was the introduction of assemblies, so that our students could be front and centre with a platform to share their celebrations, achievements and voice. Lucretia started the Malibu Glee Club in collaboration with Kolbe College which provided further opportunity for our students to be centre stage. The memories and opportunity Lucretia has provided for our staff and students have been invaluable and we wish her well as she commences a teaching role in her new school.
I hope you enjoy the rest of the break with some great family time moments and look forward to seeing you soon.
Kind regards
Merrilee Wright

She has a delightful bubbly personality and creates the most warm, positive and fun environment in her classroom. Another term done and dusted and haven’t we been super busy.
This term we started to come to Malibu School 3 days per week. At first it was a little unusual but we soon forgot about the first half of the year and moved forward without any hiccups. Our Wednesday mornings are just as our usual Monday and Tuesday. We go outside to play and are soon joined by our playgroup friends who are used to using our classroom and playground on a Wednesday. Getting to know them is fun and we’re pretty sure they like having us around too. We soon leave our area to join Jane in the kitchen for the Stephanie Alexander program. Here we either cook something small or wander around the Malibu School garden to see what’s growing this season.
After our morning tea we come back into our class and our class is different again with Angela our teacher for the rest of the day. We’ve been learning about our body parts through song and activities at our desks. We also have Aboriginal Studies with Angela. We’ve made damper, boomerangs and made animal prints in the sand. Book week was super fun. We went to our first school disco and had so much fun. In class we are currently reading Dear Zoo – A Rod Campbell book featuring the lovable Spot. We look forward to term 4 knowing Christmas celebrations will be just around the corne.
Enjoy the holidays

Term 3 in J4 has just flown by!
This term we have welcomed our new student Lawrence into the class who has quickly made friends and always comes to school with the brightest smile on his face!
Some highlights from this term has been the book week disco where we all got to dress up and dance the day away with other local schools!
Another highlight was when we got to decorate a doughnut with Dads and special Dudes as part of our Father’s Day celebrations. It was so great to have some special visitors and I know both students and their Dudes enjoyed the morning!
This term, along with more sun, we have been enjoying going out into the garden more as part of our Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program. Last time we went out, some of our students even got to help push wheelbarrows outside of the school to the bins.
Coming up in week 10 we have a cricket carnival and a sport carnival which we are getting very excited about too!

Middle 6
Term three can be a hard term though M6 have continued to be the best that we can be. We laugh together, work together and have come together as a team.
In Maths we have been learning to tie our shoelaces! We’ve developed our skills in understanding the language of under, over and around and we are working on making those bunny ears the right size. It’s been tricky but we’re getting there!
In HASS we have been reminding ourselves and each other of the rights that we have: to feel safe, to have shelter and to have food. We have learnt that those rights also come with responsibilities to show safe hands and safe feet.
We have enjoyed designing our advertising poster for our Enterprise project. Everybody contributed to it and we are incredibly proud to display it in our classroom window. Don’t worry if you can’t get to M6 to see it – there will be copies around the soon school!

Science
Our students have been very busy learning about Earth and Space. We have been exploring the sky in the day and night, the different types of weather, and what clothes we need when it is cold, hot or rainy. The students have enjoyed looking at the earth’s resources (land, air, water and living things), extreme weather and natural disasters and some have made landscape and earthquake models. Also, our students have conducted experiments with soils with surprising results. Our older students have been busy building all sorts of bridges with different materials to see what designs are successful. Others have investigated different planets and are putting together a movie to show all their fantastic research. Amazingly, some of our junior students have memorised the order of the planets.

Stem
In the Junior classes we have been working hard in STEM to code creatively when solving a task. Students continue to build knowledge on coding by changing and moving characters in a sequence. They are also enjoying the Robotics of a code a pilar, when students change their directions.
In Middle classes students continue to improve their knowledge on the Stop Motion App. As students mould their frog clay creations they are learning the life cycle stages. They are also developing the Book Creator skills to see their progress in STEM. Students have shown much improvement over the term.

Science fun at Scitech
M1 and M2 had a brilliant time at Scitech, experiencing the wonder of space. With something for everyone, we know they had a great time exploring the many hands-on activities on offer!
Outside fun
It's great to get outdoors, take a ride or enjoy some 'messy' play! Here are some great pics of our juniors out and about!
Annual Food and Toy Drive
In recognition of Anti-Poverty Week during the 15th to 27th October, and the impact of the rising cost of living, Malibu School is pleased to help those in need. We invite you to help spread some joy by donating non perishble food items and/or toys to help support local families in need.
