Dear families 

Welcome to the end of term 2 newsletter! It's been a great term and I hope you're ready for two weeks of holiday fun and family. 

Hopefully you will have received your child's Semester 1 report. It has been very pleasing to see such progress and achievement for all of our students. I know our staff are proud. Please contact your child's teacher or the malibu@education.wa.edu.au if you haven't received your report. 

Plenty of exciting learning happening next term. Following the successful introduction of our Explicit Literacy Lessons in the Junior Block every day, students in Middle Block will also be commencing the Explicit Literacy program. I look forward to bringing you more information about this in future newsletters. As the weather starts to get warmer, we look forward to many whole-school events that include Book Week, the Book Week Disco and the end of term Faction Carnival. Full details about all of our school events can be found on our online school calendar (available via this newsletter, on our webpage and on the Schoolzine app). 

At the end of term 2, we farewelled (L-R) long-term staff Brittany Dyer-Smith (EA) who is headed to Koorana ESC and to Kate Sharp (Teacher) who is taking up a Deputy position at Meadow Springs ESC. We farewelled teachers Kellie Ord (J7) and Petrus Ng (STEM / Technologies) who are also headed off to new schools closer to home and wished teacher Liam Martin (J3) all the best as he completes his final teaching prac. We are very grateful to each and every one of them and wish them all the very best for their education journeys ahead. 

For next term, we are excited to be welcoming (L-R) teachers Suzie Roberston to J7, Chris Glasgow  to M3, Natalie Boyd who will be leading PP-10 STEM / Digital Technologies and Robyn Drake-Brockman taking the Senior Secondary Technologies classes. We are delighted to welcome back teacher Mary Shanahan to J3.

During term 2, we welcomed new Senior School Deputy Clare Bradshaw and Deputy Sarah Priestley. I am pleased to advise that Sarah will continue during Term 3 working with Junior Deputy Stacey Hansord.

We are also very pleased to celebrate and welcome our newest permanent Education Assistants Megan Turner (J2) and Naomi Henderson (J7) to our Malibu team.

Next term we start with Semester 2 IEP meetings from the first Wednesday back, 19th July from 3pm. More information will be sent to you in the next week so that you may make an online booking with your child's teacher. These sessions are so important in planning the most relevant learning for your child, your input is most valued and we aim for a meeting with every child's parent / caregiver. It is appreciated if you can please bring along a copy of your child's NDIS goals. Please contact your child's teacher at your earliest convenience if you can not make the sessions on offer on Wednesday 19th July.

News from the Board

Hi families

End of Term 2 already so I hope everyone is ready to relax and have fun while on holidays.

We recently called for a new Parent Representative for the School Board and we welcome Brad Seawright as our newest parent member. Our Board will be holding our next meeting on Tuesday 8th August and we look forward to welcoming him then. 

Congratulations to our recent School Board Award winners: Jackie Watts (Chaplain), Nola Howlett (School Officer), Shelly Whittall (Teacher) and Debbie Smith (Music Teacher - not pictured), presented their certificates of appreciation by the Board Vice-Chair Jason Biffin. Our school community values the contribution you make to the students, staff and families of Malibu. 

Our next Board meeting will include information about our children's progress in Semester 1. Merrilee will then be sharing this information in our future newsletters so that all families can see the difference our school and staff are making.

P&C President Report

Good Day to you all

Welcome to our new financial members and congratulations to Tori Murphy for taking on an executive role as Secretary. I know you will do great 😃

It’s so refreshing to see how well things are flowing with our school P&C. I feel it really compliments our school family really well. I’m so proud to represent all the families in the school and be a part of helping our school grow, for not only our kids, but for the generations to come. 

Our first fundraiser for Mother’s Day was amazing. Since then we’ve done our winter warmer raffle drawn at our assembly. We are still finalising funds but I suspect it’s over $300 raised. Congratulations to Reef of J3 for winning our Winter Warmer Raffle. I’m sure your family will help you enjoy all those lovely goodies in the basket.

Thankyou to the parents that pulled together to make everything run smoothly. I know your time is very valuable. I’ve worked on other P&C’s before but I love this one more as every member is digging deep and is giving of their time to support our kid's school. Us as parents or carers of children at Malibu School deal with things everyday that other parents couldn’t conceive and still you all choose to dig deeper and give of yourselves, knowing what it means for our little ones here.  

I’m excited to see what we all can do over the next coming months. Our goal is to grow steadily and strong, so we aren’t taking too much on at the moment to build our roots deep, so that we can thrive and be sustainable. 

We do have Fathers Day coming up and are planning on something similar to the Mother’s Stall. With this in mind, if you have any unwanted gifts that are suitable and you would like to donate, could we please have them in by early August. Will send out an actual date they are needed by in the new term. 

We are aware that some families within our school run their own businesses and may wish to donate towards our fundraising is someway. We can be contacted by email at MalibuPandC@gmail.com

Meet the team! Teacher Tylah Adams J4

Tylah moved to Carnarvon before her first birthday and lived there for 12 years. Although she’s been a Perth girl since then, she still feels most at home on the red dirt!

When she was first working as an EA in mainstream, it always left her wanting more; more challenges and more opportunities to build her skills. When she started at Malibu as an EA, she knew it was the best place to grow and learn. Since then, she has also been a qualified swimming teacher and is now a fully qualified teacher in J4.

Her favourite thing to do is to interact with the students in class and out in the playground. Her colleagues would describe her as bubbly and reliable and she would like to be known for the care and respect she shows to our students.

Tylah has enjoyed implementing our new literacy program and enthusiastically enjoys working alongside her colleagues to create the most engaging and meaningful literacy lessons.

"As I enter this new phase of my career, I hope that I can continue to learn off the amazing teachers we have at Malibu, to better my practice and develop a greater understanding that best supports our students".

Semester 2 IEP meetings - Wed 19th July

At the start of every semester, our teachers meet with parents / carers to discuss their child's strengths, interests, abilities, supports and future goals. This collaborative meeting sets our future planning for your child and helps us to build strong relationships. Your child's progress and achievement of the goals created are reported on at the end of the semester.

Parents / carers are encouraged to attend a 40 minute Individual Education Plan (IEP) meeting with their child's teacher. A selection of after school options is available for your convenience.

Please note, online bookings are available to all families who receive our e-newsletters through email registration with our Schoolzine account. If you are not sure, please contact the school and ask us to register your account.

Should you not be able to attend one of these sessions, please contact your child's teacher today to discuss options to attend an IEP meeting during the day.

Junior 1

Junior 1 has had an amazing term 2.

We have continued to explore our classroom and find hidden toys ot make our day fun. We love to start our day with some outside fresh air (weather permitting). After, we come inside, sit at our desk and begin our hard work which includes books, puzzles, our name books and make whatever we choose with our coloured playdough.

After packing away, we make our way to the mat to join Bec and begin our morning circle. Here we use BigMac’s to communicate our name, sing some good morning songs and dance with bubbles. 

Morning tea is always upon us before we know it and outside we go for some fun times with our friends from the whole junior area. We continue to make our craft farm animals, read some amazing books with Bec during literacy, put together our shape craft and have some quiet afternoons on the mats.

This term we also welcomed our new student Theo. He has fitted in well into our classroom and the students and staff have fun showing Theo around his new classroom.  With one week to go, we’re thinking about term 3 and how excited we are because we get to come to school for 3 days instead of 2. We are very excited to have the Little Stars Playgroup Plus children join us for a Wednesday morning play too!

Junior 5

In Year 3, we have been completing weekly news sessions where students bring in something from home for them to show their peers and talk about it. One student has a turn a week to tell news, and this has run all semester. We have incorporated use of AAC and PODD books and it has been great having our families involved.

All our students especially look forward to Fun Day Friday in J5, as it is the day students get to bring in a toy from home and play with it with their peers. This builds social skills and supports our students in learning to share their prized possessions with others. 

In J5, we also have had a group of students completing weekly homework, which has been a huge hit with students and the families in the classroom, and is something that is looked forward to each week.

It has been a wonderful first Semester of Year 3, and thank you to all our families for their support!

Art

JUNIOR -  Dance Legends

Dance, in all of its forms, goes beyond mastering a series of steps. Dance is an ideal tool through which to teach students about physical literacy, movement concepts, self-worth, self-expression and relationships. Dance is also a large and rich part of our culture and our society. Students engage in dance to express their cultural identities, to problem-solve, to convey artistic ideas, and strengthen their social interactions.  (Melchoir, 2011)

This semester the Junior classes have explored the elements, skills and processes of Dance and learned to work safely, specifically with space and time, whilst experiencing a variety of dance routines which have focused on movements skills and genres of dance. The students have experienced the roles of audience and safe dance practices as individuals and as a group. It has been truly remarkable to observe student achievement across the Junior area in Dance.  Every session is full to the brim with smiles and laughter as the students groove their way through a varied playlist of HipHop, jazz, Classical and Contemporary styled movement and dance sequences.

MIDDLE - Drama – Circus Crazy

Circus is an art form with a distinct body of knowledge including conventions, history, skills and method of creating. It is a vital part of our society and is celebrated worldwide as an expression of culture and belief as diverse as the values found in Australian culture.

This semester the students of Middle One and Three have been provided with a medium for personal expression through Circus skills. Working individually and in small groups the students have been provided with the opportunity to blend specialist physical activities with theatrical performance skills. They have been encouraged to work collaboratively and co-operatively throughout the process of creating and performing circus skills. This has enabled the sharing of ideas, feelings and experiences whilst providing a valuable and unique means of enriching the physical, athletic, emotional, intellectual and social development for all the students. From balancing plates to twirling batons, there is not much that this fine collection of students cannot do.

MIDDLE - Media Arts – Stop Motion Meals

Media arts provides students with an opportunity to experience newer forms of creation and communication. It involves creating representations of the world and telling stories through communication technologies. Media arts lends itself to integrated learning and project-based learning as students can develop and demonstrate skills in several discipline areas.

This semester the students of Middle Six have been exploring the Stop Motion Studio Application and its various uses to present information.  Stop Motion is a basic form of animation where a set of still photos, played in a rapid sequence, creates the illusion of movement. It follows the same basic principle as a flip book. These learning experiences have promoted teamwork and collaboration, as the students worked together to plan and create their projects. Commencing with Claymation the students have progressed to creating simple Stop Motion Instructional Recipes and are working towards planning, creating and presenting more complex snacks and meals using a variety of cooking utensils, tools and equipment in semester two.

MIDDLE -  Drama – Stop Motion Story Recreation

Stop Motion animation is a highly popular medium for creating digital storytelling projects.  Because there are so many different roles involved in creating an animation, every student is able to contribute their unique talents. Add the fun and excitement of stop motion animation, and the result is engaged learners who are motivated to tell amazing digital stories.

This semester the students of Middle Two have worked collaboratively to recreate the wonderful story ‘Too Many Cheeky Dogs’, written by Johanna Bell and illustrated by Dion Beasley. This cheeky story is set in a remote First Nations community, romping through numbers, colours and days of the week to the hilarious finale.  For this project the students have worked in small groups to breakdown the story into a simple recreation format, create their plasticine characters, explored the use of green and blue screens and researched suitable backdrops which correlate with each page.  The students will continue to work on this dramatic recreation throughout semester two with the goal of recording and incorporating sound effects, voiceovers as well as Auslan video clips.  

SENIORS -  Visual Arts – Elements of Art

The benefits of the visual arts are lifelong. Visual art does not have boundaries. It enables people to play with materials, to express their thinking, to problem solve and make sense of emotions. For children, art is a way to communicate their ideas. It can be about the job of immersing yourself in the art-making process as much as it is about cognitive development and problem-solving. (Lindsay, 2020)

This semester the students in Senior One and Four have explored and experimented with the Elements of Art.  Step-by-step exploration has allowed the students to become 'a master' using a variety of techniques as they put their knowledge into practice. Through the exploration of famous artists, genres, subject matter, art forms and mediums in both directed and self-directed activities, the students have developed their critical thinking skills with regard to their own work and efforts.  Exploration of the famous work of Klee, Kandinsky, van Gogh and Warhol has inspired the creation of many wonderfully unique artworks this semester. 

SENIORS -  Visual Arts - Upcycling the Arty Way

Aside from the fact that upcycled art is a form of recycling that reduces the amount of waste that ends up as pollution in out world’s oceans and green spaces, it also majorly reduces landfill waste which has many adverse effects on out health and the environment.  Upcycled art is also a great way to show off ones creativity and talent as an artist and best of all, upcycled art is affordable. 

This semester the Senior Two students have worked in small groups to research, share interests and ideas to plan for the upcycling of old guitars into artworks.  The students have worked collaboratively to select their theme, colours, materials and the processes involved in the creation of their artworks. This carrier project has provided the students with opportunities to use a variety of hardware tools including plyers, hand sanders (manual and electrical), shears, glue guns and much more to dismantle, strip back, and modify their guitars into wonderful artworks. 

SENIOR -  Visual Arts - Art Out and About

Art Appreciations equips us with the vocabulary to understand and discuss the visual arts, while introducing us to various mediums.  Art helps create understanding of the world around us. It is an essential part of cultures across the globe because it allows us to be open to new ideas and experiences.

This semester the Senior Three students have explored a variety of Public Artworks located in spaces throughout our local area.  From murals to sculptural works, they have been presented with the opportunity to explore these works and engage in discussions providing opinions, feelings and developing an overall appreciation for these varied works.  In the same way that everyone develops their own definitions of art appreciation, everyone also develops their own preferences for the art they appreciate. The vast variety of artworks around the City of Rockingham provided the students with opportunities to form their own judgements and personal preferences.

Book Week @ Malibu - Disco & Dress-up

Malibu School is celebrating Book week with a combined School Disco on Tueday 22nd August 2023.  This is a dress-up event with the theme of 'The Sea'. Parent and Carers are welcome to join the students for the disco, a sausauge sizzle with a drink. More information will be sent next term.

NDIS Review - Parent and Staff Feedback

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) Review is seeking feedback on pricing and payment approaches in the NDIS. Findings are available on the NDIS Review website. Consultation is open until 31 July 2023.

Sim Sam Disco and Karaoke

The next Simsam Disco and Karaoke is being held at Bar Indigo, Swinging Pig Rockingham on Saturday 15^th July.

Entry is $15 and Carers are free.

Enjoy a meal and drink as the full bar is open at the event.

This is a great night to meet new people or catch up with friends, this is a private event which is only accessible to ticket holders. The venue is safe and secure for our attendees.  

Simsam also has the privilege of running an All Abilities Bingo at the Rockingham Youth Centre, 20 MacKinnon Street Rockingham, on Monday 10^th July from 5pm-6pm. Entry is free and the event is for people aged between 12 and 24. Come along and join in this free event and meet new people.

Disability Support Providers Expo

We would like to extend an invitation to families to attend our 2023 Disability Support Providers Expo in term 3. Wednesday 26^th July 2023

Come and meet local service providers, community organisations and Disability Employment Services (DES). By assisting with the preparation for employment through training, job search support, resume writing, interview skills and workplace adjustment, DES helps people with disabilities find work and keep a job.

A Guide To Toilet Training

Online workshop with Early Childhood Psychologists: A Guide to Toilet Training

Date: 13 September 2023, 8-10pm

Teaching children to use the toilet independently can be challenging at times for parents.  This workshop provides tips on how to know when your child is ready, the skills needed to use the toilet, and covers some common behavioural issues related to using the toilet.  (This workshop is suitable for parents of children with neurotypical development, and does not address any medical problems related to using the toilet).
