Dear families
This newsletter features so many voices from our students, staff, families and community members.
I start with a thank you to our new P&C for a tremendous effort in coordinating a very successful Mother's Day staff and raffle earlier this term. This is particularly special, as it is Malibu School's first P&C. One of the goals of our generous and dedicated parents is to increase the connection with our Malibu families. The P&C team are keen to host Coffee, Cake and Chat morning teas in the cafe, following each assembly. The next one is on the last Friday of term and we hope to see you there!
With winter coming, we are always mindful of the health and wellbeing of our students, staff and families. As you know, staff shortages continue across the country and we encourage any one with symptoms to stay home, please. We are still experiencing staff absenteeism at the same rate as the peak of COVID and I commend our numerous relief staff for their willingness to learn about our students and school - and I praise our Malibu staff for their continued effort in maintaining routine and high standards each day.
Teachers are currently undertaking assessments and completing reports to be sent home in the last week of term. With only three weeks to go before holidays, we are already planning our next semester IEP meetings, which will be held the first week back of school. Information about our upcoming events can always be found on our calendar, found via the webpage, on the Schoolzine App or on the side panel of this newsletter.
Stay warm and dry and we look forward to seeing you at our end of term NAIDOC assembly.
Kind regards
Merrilee Wright

News from your P&C
Hello Malibu School Family
It’s been a few weeks since our Mothers Day Stall. We had many donations come in for this and we also purchased some items to sell. A lot of heart went into preparing/purchasing/wrapping/selling all the great gifts for our Mother’s Day Stall and Raffle. I’m personally thankful for the ladies that put in a lot of time behind the scenes to make it all a great success. You ladies rock!
In just a couple of weeks we came together as our new P&C and put on our first fundraiser. We raised just over $1230.00 between the Mothers Day Stall and Raffle for our P&C. This was an amazing achievement for our first fundraiser of the year. I really loved seeing all the kids come to buy something for their special someone. Some with big smiles, some focusing hard on counting their money or making sure they got the perfect gift. For me this isn’t just about making money.
We have been working on opening a bank account to deposit all our P&C funds. This will be ready to use very soon. In the meantime Sandi in the office has been doing a great job handling the money that came in for the raffle tickets and storing it in the office safe. Thanks goes out to Sandi for all her support.
If you would like to become a member, to have a voice to be heard and voting rights, it’ll just cost you $1 for the calendar year. You can pay this directly to our treasurer Jon Phillips. From there you can choose how much you would like to be involved. But at a minimum you get help make some important decisions about resources for our kid’s school. The funds raised are to help support our kids, so we would love to hear your thoughts on what to spend our P&C funds on and what other fundraising ideas you may have.
Our main goal for our P&C is to grow steadily to be sustainable for years to come. With this in mind we are being mindful of what we are taking on whilst we are just starting out. We aim to grow our P&C team to be able to share the load. We are planning to have some morning teas throughout the year to build relationships with other parents and support one another. These will be held after school assemblies.
Our P&C now has its own email address. If you would like to contact the P&C directly about anything you can email us at MalibuPandC@gmail.com
Lastly I would love to acknowledge our Vice President Kelly. She has been so dedicated to not only to her role as Vice President but supporting others in theirs as well. I personally have been involved before in the running of a school P&C, but have never taken on the role of President. So to know how much she has all our backs has really helped towards establishing our P&C. Kellie has put in many hours of research on top of supporting us as a team and helping make our first fundraiser a success. Thank you you Kellie.
I’m really honoured to get to work with some amazing people and please if your not sure how you can help but you would like to, no matter what level… feel free to come talk to me.
P&C President
Sarah Phillips
Meet the team! Kathlaine Perkins EA
Kathlaine commenced at Malibu in 2017. She was born in a small village north of Ilocos Norte, next to the ocean. Her twin sons were picked up with speech delay and learning all about speech delay and other aspects of learning difficulties / spectrums and its effects, led her to work at Malibu school.
Kathlaine believes that "There is no "I" in TEAM" and her favourite thing about being at Malibu School is watching the children grow and become confident and independent. Her colleagues describe her as professional, compassionate and caring and she would like to be known as someone who has had a positive influence on students, guiding them to develop into being happy and a more independent person. Kathlaine loves what she does at Malibu and so do we.
Meet Jackie Watts - School Chaplain
Hi Everyone
My name is Jackie. As a qualified Counsellor and mental health first aider, nothing matters more to me than happiness and wellbeing. This is why coming to Malibu as a School Chaplain was such an exciting opportunity for me.
In my first 5 weeks I’ve had the opportunity to spend quality time with both the team and the students here. This has been both in the classroom and also on trips where I have really enjoyed seeing the students engaging in different environments. I have been really impressed by the work that the team do here at Malibu and how truly passionate they are providing the best level of care, support and education possible
It is my goal as Chaplain to ensure that I support students, parents and carers at Malibu with any NDIS support or just to listen to see if I can help with any concerns that you have.
If I’ve not met you yet, please do reach out to me. I work on Thursday and Fridays and I will be here for you and that I am located in the support team office in Middle block.
Junior 7
J7 have enjoyed a busy, fun-filled, hands-on learning term! In numeracy, we have been practicing our counting and early addition skills by adding one more to a small collection. We have also been learning about length and exploring different lengths using a variety of different materials too!
In Literacy we have been busy participating in our multi-lit program and have even been practicing our writing skills to recognise and celebrate all the wonderful mothers and special carers that look after us.
We were even lucky enough to have the circus come to Malibu School this term, and we all really enjoyed watching the performance and practicing our newly acquired circus skills!!!
Kellie, Jessica, Denise and Demelza
Middle 1
Students in Middle One have been enjoying some great activities this term. They loved going to the circus this week and had great fun joining in the activities. They were able to balance plates on a stick while they were spinning and how to juggle with scarves. This continues their wonderful work in art where they have been learning magic tricks.
In maths they enjoyed doing some jellybean maths where they had to count the different coloured jellybeans and then show the data on a graph. The best part of this activity was definitely the eating of the jellybeans at the end.
Our favourite activity this week though was making Mother’s Day gifts for our beautiful mums. Students made their mums a gorgeous coaster and some cookies to share with her. Middle One hoped all the mums had a beautiful Mother’s Day with their families.
Nicky, Sharon, Adam, Annette and Vicky
Middle 3
This Semester the students in middle 3 have been working on building friendships and social skills. The students have done this by taking turns and making song choices during movement breaks, playing games together and greeting each other every morning. We have had so much fun laughing, dancing and learning every day in middle 3.
Kate Sharp, Monica, Kylie, Sally, and Blair.
Middle 5
This Semester the students in middle 5 have been working on communication skills. The students have done this by practicing the use of high frequency signs in Auslan, saying hello to each other every morning and using various AAC strategies to make their voices heard. Everyone has tried their best and we had so many great moments in middle 5.
Carissa Apps, Jade, Gemma, Bettina and Fiona.
Senior 2
Our Senior 2 class has been busy planning various outings, places out in the community they would like to visit. We are planning a train trip to Mandurah Foreshore, where we will eat some hot chips. Students have voted to go bowling and to the movies in the next few weeks. We had an enjoyable sunny day at Kwinana Adventure Park where we cooked a BBQ and had a play. We are of to Bunnings this Friday to purchase some seedlings to plant in our garden bed at school, and then we will maintain our garden bed each week.
During our Tuesday lessons, we have been building on our Business Enterprise strategies in preparation to create our Market Day item. Students enjoyed reading the book Green Eggs and Ham, and then cooked green eggs and ham in the kitchen, there were many strange looks from students, and many saying they didn’t want to try the strange, coloured eggs, however after a few staff members sat down and ate their green eggs and ham, students happily gave them a try and thoroughly enjoyed their strange dish.
We are looking forward to many more fun adventures this term together. From all of us in Senior 2 have a wonderful weekend.
Kat, Angela, Moetu, Courtney, Katrin and Sue
Physical Education
The focus this term has been on learning new skills, participation in games and activities, teamwork… and having fun.
Our Junior students have been engaged in taking turns, following simple routines and using gym equipment appropriately. Typically, a lesson starts with a short walk round the bike track (weather permitting), an action song in the gym, then the main activity and finally, a relaxing mindfulness session on the mats.
The Middle school students have been practising throwing and passing skills – overarm/underarm, rolling and bouncing balls to a partner and aiming at a target. The students then utilise and refine these skills by participation in team games. So far this term, these have included dodgeball, bocce and beach volleyball.
Senior students have engaged in a variety of games with the aim of encouraging participation and teamwork. Examples include dodgeball (always a favourite), volleyball and modified soccer. In addition, all Seniors are completing their Asdan sports booklets. S3 are enjoying learning the techniques of yoga, and are practising posture, stretching and calm breathing techniques. S2 is concentrating on ball control (kicking skills, working with a partner, working as a team etc). Finally, for S1 and S4, the themes are on choosing and using a variety of sports equipment, playing games with a partner of their choice and also performing regular warm up exercises using music as a motivator.
A lot of ground has been covered so far, and I am pleased by the students’ positive attitude and willingness to have a go. I also would like to acknowledge and thank the EAs for their invaluable support and assistance in helping the students work towards their goals in sport.

Music
The Music room has been buzzing with new sounds as students explore electronic drum kits and keyboards as part of the Middle program this term. We are learning to play high and low sounds with the drums to create different rhythms. On the keyboards, students are using their knowledge of colours to explore sounds and move up and down in pitch. We are also listening to different styles of music such as boogie woogie, swing band and percussion groups.
Primary and Early Childhood students have been exploring tapping and shaking instruments and are enjoying playing in small ensembles with drums, triangles and tambourines. Students are learning about different percussion instruments and how they are used by musicians in professional settings.
Our Malibu Drumming group is going from strength to strength with weekly rehearsals now focussing on an upcoming combined schools performance for WAGSMS in Mandurah later this year. We are learning new songs with some new moves in preparation for this event.
