Dear families
I hope you and your families are well. This is always the busiest time of year for all and with December approaching, calendars are full of planning and events! We know it is also a difficult time for some familiess so I encourage you to contact me or your child's teacher if you do need any support.
COVID-19 - We still have a few cases at school and in the community so I ask that your child does not attend if they have any symptoms. If you or your child have symptoms, please test and stay home until symptoms pass. We have stock of fee RATs available - please contact our office if you would like some sent home or pop in to the office to collect.
Next week is the final week for our year 12 and 13s. We have a big week planned with the Year 11 - 13 Employers breakfast and Assembly starting at 8am on Wednesday. Our Graduation and Leaver's ceremony will be held on Thursday eve and Navy Day with our Colour Explosion fundraiser on Friday. We have had very few RSVPs for Navy Day, so please click here to let us know if you are coming!
Your child is invited to participate in the Malibu Colour Explosion Fun-raiser. Malibu has purchased all materials for this exciting event and the smiles from the children last year showed this was a great experience. Our fun-raiser could use a little support, so if you are able to contribute, we'd very much appreciate your help! Donate online here and every entry goes into a draw for some fabulous prizes. Well worth an investment towards new play equipment for all!
On the day, we'll be asking families to complete the Parent National School Opinion Survey. This survey is a requirement across all schools, every two years, and helps us to identify what is working well and further opportunities. The information gained is anonymous, will be collated and shared with our school community. Please take a few moments to give us your feedback so that we can continue to provide the best learning experiences for your child!
Teams have been working through end of year reports and these will be ready for you in week 10. Senior students who are graduating or leaving will receive these next week.
To help your child access therapy services as soon as possible next year, we are asking for you to talk with your therapist now about submitting their request early. More information is available further on in this newsletter.
We know how busy it is to be a parent or carer and try to limit our requests to families. Thank you greatly for your support in responding to the items above.
Have a great week and we hope to see you on Friday, if not before!
Kind regards
Merrilee Wright
Meet the team! EA Elle Rawlings
Elle joined Malibu School in 2020. Her favourite thing about Malibu is the team, Her colleagues would describe her as fun and loving. She has worked to support a positive school culture as part of the Positive Behaviour Support team in 2021.
Elle loves animals and would like to have a zoo at home! Her hope for the future is to continue in the job she loves and to watch the students reach their goals and learning more about disability to make herself the best EA she can be.
Ellie's mum helped her find a pathway to her heart. Before starting at Malibi, she would come to our school every day to meet her mum after work. She met the students and participated on the days we asked for volunteers, and developed her passion from there.
"My biggest aspiration is and always will be, my mum. Working at Malibu makes me beyond proud, every single day".
Please sponsor your child for next week's Colour Explosion Fun-Raiser on Navy Day!
Malibu School is preparing for a Colour Explosion Fundraiser during our Annual Navy Day Christmas Party! All donations go into the draw to win a fabulous prize, generously sponsored by our local community partners, drawn on the day.
Your support for our school will help towards the construction of our new Koort - or heart of the school. This will be a central meeting place which will be surrounded by play and gym equipment. Something our wonderful Malibu students will be most grateful for!
Donations to our community space can be made online here. Big or small, we value your contribution and appreciate your support! https://www.trybooking.com/au/donate/malibu2022
Please RSVP your attendance to Friday's Navy Day
Our Navy friends are kindly providing lunch and activities for all. To assist in planning, we ask that you please RSVP online at https://malibuschool.schoolzineplus.com/form/24
Thank you for your ongoing support and we look forward to seeing you soon!
CLASS NEWS
Junior 4
J4 has had a very busy Semester 2! In October, J4 celebrated grandparents’ day by having an afternoon tea and having some very special people in our lives come into our classroom for an arts and crafts activity. We had some delicious food, made a keepsake fridge magnet together and a paper together – then we sent our guests away with a treat bag full of goodies we had made! It was an excellent day, thanks to all for attending, J4 loved having you in our room!
We also started going on community access trips around Georgetown Reserve practising our road safety skills and staying as a group. We always stop off at the playground for a bit of a break and when it is hot, we stop for an icy pole too! The students in J4 have blown me away with their excellent behaviour on all of our trips so far, we truly have been having a wonderful time together.
We have had all sorts of school events this semester as well, we had the very impressive Malibu Market where J4 made $282 total from our produce, which goes back into our Enterprise Eduation program! Thank you everyone who purchased something from our stall, it was great to see you all there supporting us.
We have also had the faction carnival, cricket carnival, soccer carnival AND swimming carnival – talk about busy! J4 has been brilliant at representing Malibu at all of these events by demonstrating our PBS focus behaviours: ‘being safe’, ‘show respect’ and ‘be your best’.
Our classroom is currently decorated for Christmas featuring its very own Christmas workshop where our students are practising wrapping presents and putting them under the tree. We have written our letters to Santa and are expecting replies before Christmas Day comes around. On December 1st, we will have a very cheek visitor coming into our classroom... Shh! Don’t tell anyone – it’s Miss Bailey’s Elf on a Shelf!

Junior 5
In term 4, there has been much excitement had by all, in creating our wonderful enterprise product. Our students enthusiastically collected lavender from our own gardens here in the school, which was then dried and used to fill our beautiful bags. We managed to sell over 75 items, 47 of sold on the day! So, a very successful venture by J5! Well done to everyone!
This has been such a busy term for everybody with the market day, faction carnival and swim carnival already done. Our students thoroughly enjoyed these events where they got out of the classroom and participated in some fun activities whilst enjoying the fine weather. We are now looking forward to the students being involved in the up-and-coming navy day on the 2nd December.
We enjoyed reading The Gruffalo so much last term that we have been having fun in literacy reading the other books by Julia Donaldson and deciding which one is our favourite. We then shared this with you by singing all about the Gruffalo at our assembly! Each student worked extremely hard to create a wonderful Gruffalo mask to wear or hold on the day. We are so proud of everyone in the class, all who gave it their very best effort.
Christmas is fast approaching we are looking forward to learning all about this festive season while creating some bright and colourful Christmas craft that we can use to decorate our classroom. With only a few weeks left of term I’d just like to take this opportunity to thank all the parents, and the staff of J5 in welcoming me to the class and allowing me to share this time with you. I feel very privileged to have worked alongside you all in educating the minds of some very special children.

Middle 2
Just like that we are coming to the end of another year. Without a doubt this term has been our busiest. The first few weeks of term we were working hard making our enterprise biscuits for market day. The students enjoyed working on different parts of our enterprise throughout the year which were a big hit.
In week 2 we went to the WADSA sports carnival at Atwell College in Success. I was so proud of each student in our class for participating in every activity on the day. We all had so much fun! We also had our school athletics carnival where once again all students participated and gave their best shot. This term we have been to Mandurah foreshore and Mandurah forum for our community access which has been a great success.
As we come to the end of the year and I reflect over this last year I feel so proud of every student in M2 and the progress they have made. This would not have been possible without all the hard work from our team of our EA’s. On behalf of students and families, thank you so much to Annette, Charmayne, Sally and Sandy. Thank you also to the parents for working with me throughout the year. It has been a pleasure working with you. I look forward to working together in our last few weeks of the year and all the exciting events that are coming up.

Middle 6
We've had lots of fun learning about how we are all different because we, or our families, have come from different parts of the world. We have learned that people migrate to Australia for many reasons including for work, to be with family, for the wonderful lifestyle and sometimes to escape from wars and to be safe.
Regardless of where we come from and why we are here we are all the same inside. We each have different colour skin and different colour eyes but inside our hearts are the same; we feel joy, sadness and we laugh when something is funny. We celebrated our diversity in our assembly where we all enjoyed singing and signing “I Am, You Are, We Are Australian”.
In week four we had a really great time at the Malibu faction carnival. We all gave it a really good go and had a lot of fun racing and jumping in the sack race. Everybody had a big smile on their face and thoroughly enjoyed the morning.
Can you believe that Christmas is just around the corner? We would just like to say a big thankyou to all of the staff and the carers who have made it such a wonderful year! Your enthusiasm and support has been amazing!

Senior 4
As a key part of the Preliminary Unit for Business Enterprise, Senior 4 students have focused their learning by looking at how businesses produce their products. Working as a group, students have worked at establishing their own business entity to produce a product that would be sold for economic profit to potential customers.
A business entity was carefully established, and students decided to make gluten free chocolate bliss balls as their selected item. Students were responsible for the production process in creating, packaging, and labelling of specific products that would be ultimately sold. I
n sufficiently completing the process, our class participated in selling their items at the annual Malibu School's Market Stall Day. The day proved a phenomenal success and Senior 4 students were able to generate a substantial profit which will go back into our Enterprise Educaiton program! Our terrific Senior 4 students not only sold their hand made products to the eager public but also helped promoting their unique items to potential customers throughout the memorable day.

Physical Education
Our amazing students have been busy this term being active during their P.E. lessons while learning new skills and participating in games with their friends, as well as attending several carnivals held throughout the term.
Our middle and Junior students attended the interschool PESA cricket carnival at Lark Hill and had a wonderful time trying a variety of cricket skills and games. Many activities were modified to suit the needs of all students. Our students had a wonderful time.
A group of Middle Students also attended the ESSN Sports Carnival held at Attwell College. They participated in games such as tunnel ball, flag races, high jump, pass ball, leader ball and running races, as well as having a go at modified netball. Our students were exceptional, as they joined the many events, always trying their best and showing good sportsmanship. There were many tired students at the end of the carnival. We were all very proud when Malibu was named the champion school.
A small group of junior and Middle students attended an interschool soccer carnival and did themselves and Malibu proud by showing soccer skills of kicking, running, dribbling, scoring goals and sportsmanship as they played against students from other schools.
In an exciting fun filled, active, fast moving Faction carnival held at Malibu during week four, it was wonderful to see our students, staff and families supporting their faction by wearing Orange, Maroon or Green. Our enthusiastic students were cheered on by many family members, staff, and their peers. Our students participated in a variety of modified races on the basketball court, as well as running races, sac races, dinosaur egg races, hurdles on the oval, and culminated with an entire school ‘long distance race’. Students went home with ribbons to show how amazing they were joining in fairly and having fun while being active. Thank you to the many staff who assisted on the day to help everything run smoothly.
We’d like to wish all the graduating students a wonderful future, and although early, we’d like to take this opportunity to wish our students and families a happy Christmas and safe holiday season.

2023 Therapy Request at Malibu School - please discuss with your child's therapists
As per standard practice, therapists (in partnership with parents and carers) are required to complete a Request for Therapy form to return to the school for consideration. In addition, the request will need to include the following;
- Copy of current Working With Children check
- Current Criminal History Check or a NDIS screening letter displaying NDIS number (full letter must be received, NDIS number alone is not sufficient)
- Current Public Insurance documentation
- Full details of the intended therapy, goals and attached plans, as appropriate
- Signed parent / carer consent
Plans must have a date of review, which will indicate when the current therapy ceases or that a new plan will be required. Many existing plans expire at the end of the school year and the school can not host therapies if a plan is no longer current.
We encourage new Requests for Therapy to be submitted at your earliest convenience for 2023. Should the Request be approved, you will be notified and therapy may commence soon after. Early requests will ensure a quicker school access to therapy.
Information about Requests for Therapy and to access the online forms can be found at https://www.malibuschool.wa.edu.au/therapists
Please complete the Request for Therapy form along with the above documents and email the documents to malibu@education.wa.edu.au. Forms may be submitted by your therapist, though your signature will be required.
On behalf of our teachers, we appreciate your early consideration for therapy requests to maximise a timely therapy support start for your child next year.

Ambulance Cover for Families
Malibu School has a great reputation of care for our students with complex health conditions. From time to time, we need to call an Ambulance to attend to the health needs of our students. This can be a distressing time for families, made worse with an unexpected ambulance bill!
The last thing you want to worry about during a medical emergency is the cost of transport. Many people don’t realise that even if you’re able to be treated on the scene and don’t require ambulance transport to a hospital or other medical facility, you’re still liable to pay a callout fee. It’s also worth noting that the person being treated – rather than the person who called for an ambulance – is responsible for the bill. Many health funds offer ambulance cover as part of their policies and there are options for families to get ambulance cover without other health cover.
Families are encouraged to check their health cover to make sure they are protected in the event of unexpected emergencies to avoid any unwanted surprises!
