Malibu School Newsletter - 2022 Term 2 Week 10
Principal's Pen
Dear families
I hope you are well and enjoying some family time. I know the staff are making the most of this break with many recovering and recouperating in readiness for a great return to term 3.
I've made many notes about the challenges in maintaining consistency over this term and I am so proud of the staff who continued a focus on every child's health and wellbeing. Our hopes are for a wonderful term 3 and a return to more of the programs and practices that make Malibu exeptional.
With this said, we have been pleased to have continued with some of the events that are so important to our students, community and school. Despite record staff absences, our two week Primary School swimming excursion went ahead. We celebrated a fun superhero dress-up day for the Starlight Foundation. Our Workplace Learning placements have continued to increase with a record number of employer partners providing authentic learning opportunities for our Seniors each Wednesday. Across the school, we have also increased our Community based excursions. In the last few weeks, we were grateful to celebrate NAIDOC Week to recognise and learn more about the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, enjoying a range of activities that were very much appreciated by all. Please do see our Facebook page for some wonderful moments. And finally, we enjoyed our first whole-school assembly on Friday.
We pride ourselves on our strong community and aim to work closely with our Malibu families to ensure that all members of our school community are thriving. We are aware that many of our families face a number of challenges - and we want to help. If you, or someone you know, could use a little help with food, clothing, accomodation or anything else, please let us know. All of our families are welcome to talk with any of our staff, at any time and we will endeavour to assist.
At the end of the term, we said farewell to Tania Sarich (S3) and Emma Lutz (J4). Both teachers stepped in with short notice and we remain grateful for their contributions to our students and school. In addition, we wish Tylah Adams (J5) well as she completes her final teaching practicum next term and look forward to her returning in term 4, to J3, as Lisa Thomas takes leave to complete her final teaching practicum.
As of next term, we welcome Natasha Gollan to S3, Zoe Bailey-Jones to J4 and Mary Shanahan to J5. Angela Tomlinson will return part-time to J4 and M5 with Verity Besseling. Our new teachers joined Malibu in the last few days and will be in touch with families soon.
Our Semester two IEP meetings are scheduled for the first Wednesday of next term and are an excellent opportunity to meet with your child's teacher. A full list of classes and teachers is available below and I encourage you to make an online booking, via the link below. Places are limited!
Wishing you a relaxing break with much health and happiness and I look forward to seeing you soon.
Kind regards
Merrilee Wright

School Board Update - Leanne Stewart
On behalf of the Malibu School Board I would like to take this opportunity to say a big Thank you to Yvonne Peters for her hard work and dedication to the Malibu School Board over the last 8 years.
Yvonne started on the Board as a Representative and for the last 3 ½ years took up the position as the Chair Person. As people who know Yvonne she is still actively involved with the school as a volunteer so you will see her around the school.
From all the staff, students, families and the School Board wish her all the best in the future.Congratulations to Desiree Rule and Leonie Williams who were presented with a School Board Award at the recent assembly in recognition of their service and dedication.
On behalf of the Malibu School Board, I would also like to recognise all the Malibu School staff for their dedication and hard work that everyone has done throughout the evolving COVID pandemic and wish all a safe and well earned break.

Malibu Staff Profile - Marc Antoinette
Mark joined Malibu School as an EA in 2010 after volunteering at the school. Not long before arriving, he helped to establish the Malibu school garden and learning program. His colleagues would say that the students love working along side him and he is a hard worker who likes to make others smile and laugh. Mark's favourite thing about Malibu School is seeing the difference we make in our students' lives.
Mark has a long-standing nautical history, involved in three America Cup races as a sailmaker. As an ex sailor of the Royal Australian Navy, he was also part of the Endeavour Replica team and contributed to the build of the replica ship.
Mark is committed to see every child as an individual. He believes that hard work and perseverance makes a difference for the students as they become accepted and contributing members of society. He is most proud of his daughter, who has autism, and the regular life and achievements she continues to make despite the challenges they were told she would not overcome.
Junior 1
Junior 1 class has spent this term turning our classroom into a bright and colourful coral reef.
We have explored the books, like ‘Rub-a-Dub-Sub’, ‘I’m the Biggest Thing in the Ocean’ and ‘Over in the Ocean’. We have created a colourful array of sea creatures to decorate the walls and windows. We have painted rainbow fish, made tissue paper jellyfish, paper squid and paper plate pufferfish. Our creative endeavours made us a little messy by covering us in paint, paper, glitter and glue. We have loved dancing along to counting, alphabet and ocean themed songs.
The Junior 1 class has had an absolute ball learning through play, art, sensory experiences and music.
We are looking forward to Semester 2, when Kindy days increase to include Wednesdays and our students get to spend three days a week having fun and learning with all our friends.

Junior 6
This term has been a busy one!
We have had a fantastic time learning and developing our skills in and out of the classroom making positive choices and worthwhile memories.
Students in J6 participated in interm swimming earlier this term and had a ball. They all enjoyed developing and mastering their swimming skills with flying colours. Students also enjoyed the Starlight Foundation Disco and got to show off their cool dance moves.
J6 also participated in all the activities for NAIDOC week 2022.
Students have been developing their AUSLAN skills in our class circle time and Talk for Writing lesson. We have been primarily focused on signing the days of the week.
I am so proud of all the efforts that J6 have mastered this term. It certainly has a been a busy and tricky term. However, we all hope you enjoy your well earnt holidays. I know we will.
Di Jacobs, Melissa, Anne Marie, Kathlaine and Shelli
Senior 1
During Term 2, Senior 1 have had a lot of exciting adventures, out in the community. We have been to The Warnbro Public Library, Bunnings Rockingham, Ace Cinemas (Movies), Zone Bowling and The Waikiki Shopping centre. All of our excursions have been full of fun and learning.
We are learning to catch public transport to our destinations, how to use our smartriders correctly by tagging on and off the bus and behaving appropriately whilst out in the community.
We are looking forward to the school holidays for a nice break and coming back to Term 3 with more learning adventures.

Science
This term we have studied how materials are used in our world
Students have developed an understanding of the properties of different materials and how they relate to using them.
Students tested different materials to see which were waterproof. While investigating the materials, our students explored different ways to test properties of the materials which helped us gain knowledge to choose materials wisely.
Plastics have been used instead of glass in bottles and windows. Designers have incorporated new materials in clothes and bags to better suit our needs.
We need to do more so that materials have the desired properties but have less impact on the environment.
Rob Kelly
STEM
In STEM this term, students have been learning about materials used within Design and Technologies.
Students have been exploring the design process while enjoying numerous exciting projects, from building towers and bridges to designing and making mazes, and ball launchers.
Students enjoyed all the building challenges. Play-base ‘Build a Bridge’ project allowed some students teamwork skills to shine, while others had opportunity to learn how to play and work together.
The favourites were ‘Ping Pong Launcher’ and ‘Catapult’ projects.
All Students and staff happily engaged in the creation process where they made predictions, tested the designed solutions and enjoyed the play afterwards.

Pyjama Day - Friday Week 1 Term 3
National Pyjama Day is all about wearing your favourite pair of PJ's to help The Pyjama Foundation raise much-needed awareness and funds for children in foster care.
With the money raised from National Pyjama Day, you’ll be helping us offer learning skills to more children, fund educational resources and help provide stable, positive relationships. So we're asking for our staff and students to put on the favourite PJ's with a gold coin donation which will be forwarded to the Pyjama Foundation. Thank you for your support!
